for those of you who keep advocating 'manual submission', I'm interested to know how you think either the directories or the search engines can tell the difference between an article that was submitted 'manually', and one submitted using one of the later generation of automated submitters. Aside from the quantity that could be submitted automatically at one time, of course.

This is actually a very good point to raise. I currently work for an SEO agency and we use submityourarticle.com, and notice nothing but excellent improvements for our clients (onviously article submission isn't all that we do - we'ree not cowboys!). however that being said, the deep category choices offered to manual submission are worth looking into, but be aware that deep categories may not be indexed.

It's a tough one. I guess you have to choose what game you play ball with...

isnt that like saying submitting the exact same website to numerous directories (dmoz etc) is spam?

I think the point everyone is trying to make is that there's more worth in one link coming from one source from one piece of content than there is in any link coming from duplicate contet etc...

Each link towards a site is worth a vote, and by submitting your srticle to 2 or 3 high quality directories, you're getting 2 or 3 times more votes. The question is what is each vote worth? If Google picks up on this duplicate content, some of the links will be worth nothing but that empty vote. That vote is still worth having just so you get indexed though.

It's the same as this(I believe - please correct this if im wrong). Google follows all nofollow links to see where they go, and to pass on domain relevance, however nofollow stops all page rank flowing to the anchored page.

How competitive are all of the industries you are marketing for? That has some impact on how cheeky you can be with link building.

My point was submit manually to the best directories instead of spamming 100s of directories with the same article. it's pointless only 2 or 3 will get indexed. I've tested this 100s of times.

I'd fully agree with this. Also, watch out for 'instant' acceptance directories too (obviously).

In reality, good Directories are those that have quick turn around times, and generally sustain themselves from relevant trafficed ads, not £6 - a - pop submissions, so steer clear!

Article writing and submission to directories is so time consuming though. Does anyone actually have some sort of strategy they use?

as many as you can arrange get you best result from them. the increasing backlink from article site is not possible. so use them as creating brand image of your site by submitting good review about your company. its help you to generate online reader friendly content for webmasters.

I think this last part (rewriting) is the key. How much would you alter your initial article before resubmission to a new directory? Fully? Partially?

about 50% is usually enough for Google to index, its important to change the structure not just replacing words.

Even if they are spinning the articles imagine how many synonyms and sentences would be needed to create 200 50% unique articles - I would avoid them.

Thank you StevieP. Although to be honest with you, it sounds easier to me (and less time consuming for that matter) to re-write the whole article from scratch instead. Replacing the structure effectively to match the rest of the context is not that easy to do. Especially, if you want to maintain the quality (even in SEO terms) of your article.

The best strategy is to get a number of articles. Add a few to your own website and every week submit at least 2 articles to top 50 articles directories and keep changing the keywords' titles and get some links to the inner pages also.
