I recently bought a domain and I just saw that everyone can see all my personal info if he uses domain "whois". The company that sold me the domain wants me to join a program that will hide my info, but I have to pay for that. Is there a way to handle this differently?
You have to pay extra fee for the whois privacy protection, try to transfer your domain to name.com, as i know it's has the great service with lowest whois privacy fee on the web. or you can buy one-time 5 domains at godaddy and then get it for free.
There's no way to hide "whois" because that's the function of their site--to show domain info. You should create a fake profile so they won't be able to find you.
Creating a fake profile is highly unadvisable. Someone can report you to ICANN, and in extreme cases your domain could be terminated. The easiest (and often only) solution is to use a whois masking service. Most registrars offer them, just be careful that the service you sign up for makes it clear that you still own the domain. Often times, this sort of engagement makes it so the registrar legally owns the domain, and people have gotten burned by this arrangement. The alternative (and often better solution) is to, assuming you reside in the USA or country with similar laws, register a D/B/A (Doing Business As) with your county or local jurisdiction, pay for a P.O box, and sign up for google voice. Voila, your home address, telephone number, and name have been fully masked. Many times, you don't have to actually even do the DBA, but it's advisable.
