Here's the most ideal natural way of acquiring quality backlinks or link building if I may say so.

    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/06/quality-links-to-your-site.html

    Hope that proves useful.

There is no official definition of a "legal" backlink.
However, Google gives one sometimes - any backlink to your site which was placed as a free will of a webmaster of a donor-site is a legal backlink.

horsey67745, I have checked your previous posts, and most of them are looking like this one: short, irrellevant and not understandable.
If this is caused by your problems with English - try to write a bit more extensive answers, so people can grasp what you wanted to say.
If you simply trolling to get some post counts or sig links - go to other forums and troll there, do not spam DP, please.

    Sorry for the hard remark.

According to google the only legal way to do backlinking is to write good content and have visitors link to it, "if they like it."

you people need to look up the definition of the word 'legal'.

Last time I looked, Google was neither part of the legislative or Judicial executive, nor any kind of law enforcement agency.

The frustrating part of building links is that many forum seem to discourage it. All I want is for my one page vitae to appear on the first page of my google name search. I'm not trying to spam anyone, but I feel really guilty when I try to use strategies on forums. Much advice lists blogs and forums as good sources for putting your web link in your signature when you make a helpful comment, yet when i go to the forums they say stuff like don't post a link of your private web page.

good content goes unnoticed if not promoted properly and promotion in the world wide web means forums, blogs, social networking sites, etc which Google discourages!!!

I think "legal" is the wrong word here.
    Maybe you meant "proper"?

That can include link exchanges, directory submissions, article directories (original articles), blog commenting (not spam) and many others.
When you go extreme with link building it usually requires an assistant.. doing everything alone is quite hectic.

wog- I definitely agree with that!

tara55- I've not heard of building it through emails. Maybe someone else will know for sure. I have heard some people say send your links to friends and associates and hope they post it somewhere.

The other tip is to go on social networking sites like twitter and myspace. Since I only have two contact on myspace, I tried to make some friends, cold turkey. One response was, who are you and what do you want. ouch!
