The best way to get a blog up and running is to either do a lot of research on google, or to pay somebody to set the blog up for you, and explain what they are doing.

Select a theme that use valid code and proper placement of H1 tags. You can use all in one SEO plugin to format you post title and keywords to get better search engine ranking.

It would be a wise step to install another copy of wordpress somewhere else ( say, in a subdomain) and use it for testing purpose. make sure to keep it invisible to search engines and out of being indexed. When you do practical testings without fear of messing up with the hard work, you will come out with great experience and knowledge.

I am a regular Wordpress blogger, everytime i setup a wordpress blog, 1st thing i do is, i add "All in one seo tools" and "google xml sitemap" plugin, which helps to optimize my seo.
Google search is the best choice for the new blogger i guess :)
