Due to the number of domain name scams taking place across the web, it pays to always do your research before buying any domains from anyone. This sale maybe 100% legit but research well before buying.

Yep - I think this guy is a known scammer based on some of the PMs I've received. What "research" techniques do you folks recommend? It sounds like he's hacked GoDaddy accounts - pretty much any proof of ownership would be easy for him to fake at that point, no?

Lastly, any advice on the "correct" use of PayPal would be appreciated. For example, is sending funds as a "Goods" better than a "Gift"? I would think failure to deliver the "Goods" would be pretty easy for PP to side with the buyer (as opposed to sending the funds as a "Gift").

I've opened a dispute with PP citing the potential fraud. I was honest and said it was for "Virtual Goods to be delivered electronically" and explained it was the purchase of domain names. I hope they don't blow me off claiming there's no way to "prove" he didn't deliver. Ugh - this was my basically my first transaction here on DP. Not a good way to start...

Oh yeah, one last thing: early today I had a good, positive experience buying from another seller. How can I leave feedback? Don't I have this level of permission? I want to reward the guy! :)

    Ok folks. Bad news:

I just spoke to a Dispute Manager at PayPal.

Because I told the truth (this was a virtual good) they will be siding with the seller. Like that? It gets worse. Even if this scumbag does not dispute my claim (which I opened with PayPal) they will still release the funds. He can ignore PP's request for "his side of the story" and they will STILL side with him.

The best part? Since I caught this early he was not able to remove the funds from his account. No matter - they will release the funds within 30 days. She said that normally if you select "virtual goods" as the item in question, their system automatically closes the ticket and sides with the scumbag seller. But I marked it as a tangible good, so the ticket will be reviewed, but ultimately ignored by the drones at PayPal.

    So, what to do?

    a. Use your credit card (I just spoke to CitiBank about this) and NOT your PP funds. Unlike our friends at PP, Mastercard would consider this a "service not rendered" and act accordingly to get the funds back from PP. If the seller fails to respond, MC will side with the BUYER. Novel idea, huh?
    b. Just use an escrow service and be done with it.

Whew - I'm bummed (and kind of exhausted) about my experience here at DP. I know its not the forum's fault, but after buying MANY domains via the big name auction sites with great success, I was hoping for a good alternative...

One way could be asking the domain owner to load a .html page on the domain with something written on it. Something that only you and the seller are privy to - any sentence or word.

So if he has the access to the domain hosting he will be able to do so, otherwise hacking godaddy won't help him alone. (assuming the hosting isn't with godaddy)

Is this foolproof folks ? Open to scrutiny.

If he has access to GoDaddy, he can point the domain to a different server.
