Once you have the link, view the pages source code (Ctrl+U) and search for your link (the URL it goes to). If it looks like this: <a href="http://www.YourSite.co.uk/" rel="nofollow">Great Site!</a>, then it's no follow - notice the 'rel' attribute?

Good information here, all. But I'm still wondering what a "link wheel" is?

Thanks a lot for all your explanations, I feel a bit more knowledgeable now.
Btw, I have another question: I have an anime blog, and I was wondering since people usually search google after the name of a show and not "anime" in general (which was clearly one of my keywords), would it be clever to change the settings so that the homepage (which has most PR of the site) contains all posts? Then since every post is concerned with a particular series, all the names would become keywords.. but that would also mean that it would be veeeery long (the home page I mean), since it'd have about 50 long posts. What do you think?

This is not a good idea for a few reasons. First of all, the page will be larger - so it will load slower (speed if now a factor for google). You will have a LOT of repeat content, think about it - first of all you have the post content on the main page, then you have it on the individual post page. This is duplicate content that you will get penalised for.

You cannot make a single page rank for every keyword, for every episode. It won't happen. Your best bet is to have the homepage rank for you broadest and primary keyword phrase. Then, all posts and pages should be optimised for the long tail. Which, in this case would be episode names etc.

Thanks, I really thought it would be a good idea, put if you put it that way, it's best that I asked first..
May I ask you how many posts you'd suggest I keep on the main page? I currently have 7 (the most recent).

If I am taking the first n number of words out of a post to display on the homepage, then I keep it quite low to avoid duplicate content issues. 5-10.

However, for my high quality sites. I will actually take the time to write a short description of each post. This description will be used for the homepage and category listings etc. It's completely unique, and doesn't have the same content as the original post - so I don't get penalised for duplicate content. :)

@Mefisto20, the yahoo site explore seems broad in terms of responding the number of backlinks while google tends to be so precised all the time and that sets them off differently. As per observation, they're both up-to-date with their reports.

I've tried with backlinkswatch.com and for my site (blog) I don't get a good view (it says I have 1 backlink lol!).

I would like to thank you all for participating in the discussions and for helping a newbie out (myself), and I am really grateful to you all (especially Deacalion, he was particularly active, thx a lot).

You can check page source to see if there is rel=nofollow, but an easier way is to use an SEO toolbar for your browser. There are several of them, for example "SEO Quake" extension for Safari. I don't use Firefox but I'm sure if you do a Google search for 'nofollow toolbar' or something you'll see tons of them. They highlight/cross-out nofollow links so that you can easily see.

i think the name derives from having siteA link to siteB which links to siteC which links to siteD which links to siteA creating a wheel or loop. Its supposed to help SERP.

I got the point of the article, but it would be great to be able to "feel" your actual progress every now and then.

Welcome to one of the peeves of SEO. I come from a programming background, where - if you make a mistake, it's immediately visible and you can fix it.
This part of SEO, where you have to wait and wait for results annoys me. :)

In the end, I stopped tracking rankings and the number of backlinks. Now I simply look at how many visitors I'm getting and the conversion rate. Since I've shifted my focus my results have been better.
