Keyword Research plays an Important role in your website SEO.Many Website starter use broad keywords while choosing keyword and they fall into competition.

    I prefer longtail keywords:-

    Suppose for eg:-
Here is the Keyword "interior design" now by checking its searches in google keyword tool "450,000" high competition.

Now Make it Long tail "interior decorating design" now by checking its searches in google keyword tool "2,900" Low competition.

So it is better to optimize website on "interior decorating design".

Well, I don't agree with you gwbbaby. Keyword Research essential process in marketing your online business or putting your website on top. You must find a right and strong keywords that will attract your target customers in your website. You must choose a keywords that are simple, relevant to your site and keywords with 2-3 word has higher conversion rates that single word keywords. For sure, keyword research will promote your online business.

Actually, if you all would look at it in a wide scenario, gwbbaby is right. How? Let's see below:

    Keyword 1: 500,000 searches
Keyword 2 (long tail): 5000 searches

If I would use keyword 2 than I am also covering/optimizing my site for keyword 1 automatically. So @keyword_research, if you are saying that one should only focus on competitive keywords, than I might not agree with you because the tougher the competition, the longer it would take to get results on SERPs.

Whereas if we use long tail keywords, we would not only get targeted traffic/visits but also a good and quick ranking in SERPs as well.

Let me know if this makes any sense.

The more words that you put into your term the less likly that people will be searching for it. You can look at it the other way the longer your term the more chance you will have people that want what you are offering as they couldnt find what they were looking for in a shorter term.

It can be hard to get to the top of some of the shorter terms quickly, the best advice there is to run a pay-per-click add as you try to get your seo to kick in, the more people you have on the website and social bookmarking the website then the more popular it will become so the easier you will be found.

@keyword_research What if simple keywords are not searched by the searchers, I'm just focusing on long tail keywords, You can see many top bloggers and gurus asking to take keyword that has less competition.

I agree with you. But same time it is better if long tail keyword has some more competition search volume. There is no harm if we optimize long tail keyword with less competition search volume.

long tails is the best way coz people dont use single words term like interior, or designer these are broad term and not relevent as well you have to be very specific. ex interior design India. if your target audience is India

There is a huge volume for the keyword "Interior Design" while there are no search trends for the second keyword "interior decorating design". So if you optimize your first keyword and promote your site on it more and more you will get good results for sure. I dont think you will get any benefit if you will go for the second keyword because no one searches for it.

I always go for popular/semi popular for the homepage... then all of the inner pages are targeted at long tail terms, most linking back to the homepage as well.

What are you saying? The site will only get traffic on keywords which have high competition coz people are using that keyword to search on google or any other search engine and if keyword has low competition that means keyword is not searched regularly. If you are only thinking of ranking then you can use any keyword which has competition as low as NIL. But you will not get traffic on that and no earnings dear...

    Thanks :)

I think its not bad to use long tail keywords as they are very easy to bring on high position but its also not good to promote all time these keywords as they have very low competition in comparison of high competition keywords. People search those keywords which have generally good competition and on this matter long tail keywords have no place as they have low competition. So its not that bad to use long tail keywords but sometimes you can.

Exactly, as long as the search term/query is brief, searchers would get accurate results. So why not optimize for long tail and brief keywords to get instant and targeted traffic!

Remember, it's not always about competition, most of the time, it is about getting relevant traffic to your site.

If i say about keyword research tools, i think semrush is one of the best ones - i use it for a long time and glad with the results. Have you ever tried it? Maybe your opinion will be different, it will be nice to know it.

There will be more traffic on your website if you select keywords people usually search.
