Besides my other sites, i also run a game site.
It receives around 2000 uniques per day and a year ago it had 80.000 alexa ranking.
But then alexa changed their ranking algorithm (because of all the new gaming websites (arcades) came up) and now i have 400.000 with the same amount of uniques per day.

So like the others tell you, it all depends on the market.
Webmaster websites usually have alexa rankings below 100.000 with only a few 100 visitors per day.
This is because many webmasters have the alexa toolbar installed.

The alexa ranking is pretty useless unless you have a big website (Miniclip, Google, Yahoo, etc.) then you can really know if you rank better of lower than your competitors.

You can expect approximately 300 'random' users per day for an alexa of 100,000. But again, this is not an exact figure. If you have a webmaster site, you can attain 100,000 Alexa with a lot less users per day.

Also, if you tend to start a links campaign for your site, you'll notice that your Alexa will improve, but slowly it will again start increasing. This is because more webmasters use Alexa rank and will be visiting your site when you send out link requests.

It seems that it also strongly depends on the country.
In Germany you'll need about 1500 Uniques a day for a
    non Webmaster niche.

Alexa is crap, its only based on people with the toolbar, i dont know a single person who isnt a webmaster that has the toolbar installed.

doesnt your ranking depend on the traffic that has the toolbar.

I would say that in some cases it is just luck.

Search bigdaddy.com went from nothing to number 3000 in a few months...how do we all explain that? I beleive that the traffic was mostly webmaster who wanted to advertise there site, so maybe if you create a work at home nich site, you will get more alexa toolbar people dropping by.

I've really stopped paying attention to alexa, it's rankings are way out of whack.

Alexa is good for comparing sites that received the same profile of users.
For example you can compare directories because they get the same type of users but can not compare directories with a travel site.
So Alexa is good for comparing related sites.

Apart from being category specific rankings, the Alexa also depends on the country where your target market, or should I say your traffic, comes from. Because, different countries may have different number of Alexa Toolbar users. So. I personally dont see alexa as a central medium of analysis for any site...

I wish I could create something like Alexa which would rank on the basis of a Universally accepted factor.

I have one site climbing to 2000 uniques daily and only 1.100.000 in alexa :)

You definitely do not have to pay too much attention to alexa rank.

It´s no good for checking the sites with too short history (under 1 year), since no trending mathematical methods could be used for that type of sites and the results are not seasoned yet.

It´s no good to compare your site with another site that operates in different niche (like lingerie shop vs. newspaper) even though both markets are equally large.

I am using Alexa regularly, but mostly just to quickly check the site i am not familiar with if I want to predict the site´s development and potential. For this, alexa is quite good as it shows the trends over the time.

And, definitely, if your site has decent history, ranks well in alexa (under 50.000) and the trend is stable (not just 2 peks/year when you managed to socialize one of your articles successfully and then back to loneliness hell again), then you´re on a pretty good track.

Well I recieve about 500 unique a day, and I am ranked 2607. Its odd I have such a good rank since the site is brand new, and my unique htis arent very great yet.

Liquidstyle did you forgot to add a zero after 2607? :D

That seems really out of whack.

Anyways, I've got a couple of sites hovering around the 100,000 mark and both of them get 900-1000 uniques a day.

i think if Google makes such a tool included in their toolbar that would cover the more amount of audience and if microsoft does include such thing inside their browser to detect it would be wider coverage though not 100% but better than alexa.

I think I read somewhere that Alexa's ranking is based only on computers who downloaded their bar. So I wouldn't trust them.

BUT having said that - I get about 25,000 unique visitors a day and I am ranked around 27,500.

    :)

    Hope this helps

"Alexa tip:: If you want your Alexa to shoot up, shift your domain and server to a Chinese location. That should help."

And lose google serps in the process. :D

I have a site that receives 500-600 uniques a day. It's only in the 450,000 area so I'm guessing you would need at least 1,200 uniques to hit anywhere near that.

Google SERPs dont change with server changes. I have done a server change recently, and my SERPs did not get affected at all.

But the point is, are you willing to change your server just for improving the stupid Alexa figures???

You need about 300uv per day. However, it is getting hard and harder when your Alexa is getting down. I think alexa calculation is not a leaner method.
