can messing around with your Preferred domain in google webtools cause problems?

    Reason i ask because i wanted to add the www to a site i had as for some reason it never showed in google always without at the start so i went for the www. and i think google thinks i have 2 versions of the site now...whats the best move as i they have put filter on one as i think its being redirected...

    for some reason it does not let me to add both versions in google webtools.....i can verify the meta tag ...whiich i put with the other one.....i did read if you're doing a permanent redirect you dont need the non www even listed in webmaster tools
    "When you set the preferred domain, we no longer will add the non-preferred version to your account.

    I think 301 permanent redirect is the best solution here. Maybe you can try to remove your site from index, then implement the permanent redirection then submit your site again on GWT..

    This is correct. www is a universal subdomain and google understands that. Therefore, there's no need to add this on the console if it as well represented the main site though redirected through 301 redirect. Google only requires the base or naked domain (ex. domain.com not www.domain.com) and not the redirected ones as it represent no real or physical files (which they analyze) but redirected to something it is related.
