Although it does take a while to do so, the entire point is to engage with a consumer base, excite them about your business/product and draw them in. Essentially, you're manually building site traffic by talking with a community of people. Once you have this socially networked traffic, you can start to churn out quality content (that's unique) and increase the number of backlinks for your particular site. This way, it's an organic way of increasing site traffic, but you get to maintain goodwill with them at the same time.

Facebook is a good one that has worked for me. Basically setting up a Facebook PAGE for your business is a good way. You can have hundreds of FANS/LIKES in a matter of a month. This works especially good if you already have a lot of friends on Facbeook. Just suggest your new Facebook PAGE (that links directly to your site) to all of your friends. Make sure you are including good links to posts on your site in on the Facebook page. Facebook is now sending about 20% of my traffic! that is crazy!!!

    Great work Spawned!

You must be doing something right :)

People should take notice of your good results and do the same. If your audience is on Facebook (and unless you are an IRS agent or Police Officer) chances are they will be using FB. It's super easy to set up your blogs RSS feed to go straight to your businesses Facebook page. If one person re-posts your update on FB it could go out to a thousand people who could also re-post it! If you are in an industry that is very entertaining it can DRIVE a ton of traffic to your site. But Twitter is pretty good too if you are willing to put in the time and if it coincides with your industry.

since SEO is what you can do to your own website to optimize it, you can't compare social media sites to something you do on your own site ;)

You can get a lot of traffic from social sites if you build yourself up as an expert with lots of targeted friends/followers. There is a golden rule of AT LEAST 50:1 for every 50 pieces of useful content you share you should share 1 link to your money site/push a product.

Another thing is DONT confuse your personal accounts and you business accounts. Potential site visitors dont care about your new puppy they are looking for relevant info.

I have to disagree with this. While what you can do to your own web page (on-page SEO) and your own site (on-site SEO) to optimize it in the search engines IS search engine optimization, probably the most influential optimizations you can do to make your site rank is off-site optimizations (getting other sites to link to you). This is still SEO, and actually the most important part of SEO (and most difficult).

That being said, I wouldn't think of social networking as an SEO strategy, though it "can" sometimes provide SEO benefits. Think of it as a strategy for getting traffic.

Some social networking/media profile pages allow you to enter a URL for your website which may or may not be a FOLLOWed link, depending on the social media/networking site. Many sites are now displaying Tweets related to their site's topic using widgets. Some of these widgets might republish your Tweet with the link as a followed link. People may find your site using NOFOLLOW social networking links and then decide to link to your site from their websites or others and THOSE links might be followed.

So there are often SEO benefits related to social networking IF the content found at the destination of those links is found useful, interesting, funny, etc. But your purpose for social networking should be to create brand awareness, to create a sense of community with your targeted audience, and to drive traffic to your site. Any SEO benefit that you gain is simply gravy.

My observations about SMO is that it has way less to do with the "nuts & bolts" of search marketing as SEO. It's not as quantitative. Community building breeds exponential traffic growth, sales conversions, etc. In addition, the more popular you become in social media groups, the better the chance of link-baiting from people personal blogs, etc.

That said, I have not personally made SMO work for me. I only know what I read on blogs and hear from my colleagues.

Social networking sites are really useful. It can bring you a lot of traffic to your site if you have a larger network with more than 50% of your friends/followers are interested on your product.
