You have to this once on every new VPS you buy indeed, or use Webmin, Directadmin, Cpanel to install it all automatic.

You can run a decent website on a VPS with 128 MB of RAM but you do need to do some optimization. A VPS with 384 MB should be able to run 4 websites with no problems.

because i was soley planning on using it for me, to keep costs down, i was going to use a freeware control panel. What would be your views on this?

The second is better. If you are going to use Cpanel there - definatelly go for the second solution here.

Seriously, I don't recommend putting in for a VPS with less than 512MB of RAM, especially not when cPanel is being used too. I also recommend using a UK provider as your main target visitors (UK) will receive much faster upload/download speeds to/from your VPS.

This spec would be good to start with:-

    - 10 GB space
    - 200 GB transfer
    - 512 MB memory
    - cPanel/WHM

Yes, I agree with that. cPanel needs minimum of 384 MB RAM and even then it doesnt run well.

Each panel has its own requirements so you need to check with the panel provider for those details. However a 512 MB RAM should be good enough for any of them. If you go with webmin, even a 384 MB VPS should work.

Do you have any hardware specifications on your vps like diskspace, ram and bandwidth? I know most vps providers allows you to send bulk newsletters as long as it is not spam. You can find a lot of reputable companies in the vps hosting offers with your price. Good luck

I think you need to name your bandwidth limits first of all and then decide on this or that VPS package.
