Ideas on: How to get people to sign up for newsletter

I am looking for ways to convert more people to sign up for my newsletter.

    1. Sign up for on all pages.

    2. Modal Lightbox that pops up once per visit.

Any other ideas. My website is plain "Options Weekly"

problem with #2 on most sites that it pop ups before anybody had a chance to read any content on the site and decide if it is worth signing up. So i would make it to pop up on the 2nd or 3rd page viewed

I've seen sites that offer some kind of free stuff to people that sign up for newsletters, depends on your niche this can be one option.

    Good Luck!

If I see something that moves on ANY page the ONLY thing I look for is the little [x] in the corner of the thing... if there is no little [x] I look for the back button on my browser and quickly use it. The same goes for pretty much anything I deem 'in your face'.

A few 'sign up' links would work though, as I have used those...

I am using the WP Plugin "Modal Dialog" any other popup programs to look at.

I need a popup plugin that allows me to schedule it for the second page as you recomended, the problem with a site like mine is that people alot of times hit the article directly without hitting the home page so just blocking the pop up for the home page doesnt help matters.

I hear you loud and clear, but remember, this website is not for heavy internet users like me and you. It is for stock investors who actually do sign up for newsletters.

I hear ya there too... test the waters though. Casual net users still don't like things in their face, and if you turn people off, you potentially loose them forever. That nasty black premium membership thing here on DP makes me want to log out sometimes.

Also, ya may wanna check out the advice I gave here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1877399&p=14613462#post14613462

While it likely does not fully apply to you, it still is pretty sound when working with mailing lists.

    Interestingly enough...

Today I had activated the lightbox and got 13 sign ups out of 75 visitors.

Prior to that, I had 35 signups from 2000 visitors.

    But I need more !!!! :)

Victoria B, has a very good point that I'll add too. Offer something in exchange for signing up. The fact you have a newsletter to begin with leads me to believe you have information of some kind to offer. Perhaps you could develop some type of special report with information about your niche and offer that. You you place some type of banner looking ad in the upper right corner with something Like "GET MY SPECIAL REPORT on Your Topic, CLICK HERE". When they click here you ask for their name and email and add them to the list. Make sure you give them the option to unsubscribe to the newsletter. If they are really interested in what you have to offer they will stick with you. If not they aren't real customers anyway. There is a great video about this at cunninglyclever(dot)com.

Offer a free product if they sign up and make the sign up part of the your site stand out so everyone can see it.

the only incentive to signing up for a news letter that I've seen is a free e-book or something. You can purchase PLR e-books for like 99 cents or something. I would purchase one of those books from a master resale website and just offer that as an incentive to sign up.

A bonus (in addition to the great newsletter) can motivate people to sign up. For example, you could offer a white paper or -- preferably -- a detailed case study for all those who subscribe to your newsletter, or new subscribers get a special tips and tricks edition of the newsletter, or a funny Winamp skin.

The possibilities are endless, but make sure the bonus is the right bonus for the right people. Whatever you offer, it must be directly related to the newsletter.

IF you're using WordPress, you should try a slider, up from the bottom. I know websitedesign.com has a free wordpress plugin available that does just that. Check out this example also.

Free stuff and hold some sort of contest for them to participate is the way to go!

I'm not a big fan of the pop-up box, especially the ones that pop up as I'm reading the content.

You could also look into co-registration where partner websites allow people to subscribe to your newsletter from their signup page. In return you add them on your newsletter signup form. If you can get 10 partners you will multiply your list that much faster. Just reach out to people in your niche, or adjacent markets.

The easiest method is to tell the people they're signing up to get something for free without paying for the actual product.
