Our local station just broke into programming to say that CNN is citing a French report that Osama Bin Laden is dead, apparently from typhoid.

Is anyone getting the same report and from other sources?

I'm stuck on dial-up today and the inability to research with speed is killing me!

So you dont have to load the page. :)

All sources are unconfirmed. So no REAL news about it.

I'd rather see him captured alive, but he's a coward so if they got too close he'd just kill himself.

Didn't the French put down their white flag long enough to leak the Hitler is dead story to?

This is not good news for the Democrats.

I don't think it really means a damn thing, if true.

Tbarr60 - this helps the president's policy, hurts Dems? The guy dying as a general on the ground, successful in eluding capture despite the time, material, and loss of lives spent in the attempt to bring him down? Our attention on this shows where we have gone wrong, in my opinion. He is but one hole in the dike. Putting our finger in it without addressing the reasons for the tidal shift will only lead to a million more holes.

And his death in this way, in some ways, is worse for the west. As he was never captured, the man's legend only grows and inspires more. The wahabist version of the Hohenstauffen emperor Barbarossa.

Oh, and France. I know it's a popular target today, much easier than actually thinking, or looking at history. But Hitler's blitzkrieg, long a German way of making war, marched as readily through a good part of the western world. Without the assistance of the shithead Uncle Joe, his ruthless generals, and savage soldier on the ground, we all might be singing a different tune. Say, the Horst Wessel.

France is a pain-in-the-ass relative, but a relative nonetheless. Often, a valiant one, as Lafayette, the trenches of WWI, and the Resistance shows. She has marched and died with us across many a battlefield. Hell, even as recent as Desert Storm, French soldiers of the 6th armored bled alongside the Screaming Eagles and the 82nd in a march towards Baghdad. The forward point itself was aptly named "Bastogne." I assure you, whether they are the tears of French or American mothers, wives, or children - they all fall the same way.

So, respectfully, believing the French are evil incarnate because France decided to sit this one out only betrays our arrogance, not France's gutlessness.

    LOL (on both paragraphs).:D

I just regularly dip into the book of quotes called "how to sound really smart at cocktail parties." My wife has known me long enough to know otherwise.

(I have to learn to write without the little smiley guys).

Well, if you can pull off smoking a pipe, drinking red wine, and speaking latin, you might get lucky. A certain nerdy allure. Now, if you can cook, you're golden.:p

Nicely done, northpointaiki. It's always nice to see people on the Internet who can use the English language as it was intended to be used. Eloquence is a lost art :)

It's one thing that the Dems and the press can't spin against the president and the Republicans. They all are quiet about the strong job market, gas is getting cheaper, and now terrorist number one might be dead. Keeping the guy on the run and living in caves didn't get us a knockout but it did get a technical knockout.

With earlier regimes, the loss of the top leader has almost always been a great thing. Uganda without Idi Amin is much better off for herself and the rest of the world. Libya with Momar Kadafi beaten down was good for the world.

One of my favorite quotes from a college buddy from Hong Kong: "Peace is good therefore we must fight for it."
