One of the problem most webmasters face with their wordpress blog is dealing with spam, sometimes you will not even be able to do anything when attacked by this spammers.

How Do You Know if You Are Spammed?

Many people don't know if they are spammed, you can discover by taking look at the following things in the comments.

    1. Is it full of links?
    2. Is it linking to an adult or gambling site?
    3. Is it totally unrelated to your post?

If it could meet any (or all) of these three then it is a spam comment.

How to Deal With Wordpress Spam

    1. Install a spam filter such as akismet or wp spam comment
    2. Install a ip banning plugin such as wp ban and ban the ip of the spammers.
    3. Delete the spam comment.
    4. If worst comes to worst, disable comments on your blog.

New trick lately is disguising spam comments to look like track backs. Look at them carefully, many are not and give no link back to your site.

You don't have to disable legitimate trackbacks. Just look at your comments carefully, not all that look like trackbacks are. Lazy, stupid spammers assume that most webmasters will automatically approve anything that looks like this:

So this is the new tactic, for lazy, stupid comment spammers. But if you look at the link, there is no trackback to your blog. It's just regular old comment spam.
If you just keep your comments set to admin approval only you won't get used.

Another good way to discourage comment spammers is to just remove the "website" field. Real readers who want to comment won't care or even notice. That "website" field is nothing but a big sign that say's "Spam Me". Once that is gone, they have no reason to come back.

Some spammers are insane in that they will continue to hit the same site over and over again even though their comments get deleted, IP address, blocked, emails addresses blocked, but they will continue to keep pounding their head against the wall using different emails, and proxys, just to leave ONE comment as if they are going to will an approved comment.

When you remove that "website" field it gives them no reason to keep coming back.

I have a fairly popular blog and I get hundreds of spam comments everyday (many of it are trackbacks) so I disabled it.

Goto settings >> discussions >> disable trackbacks and pingbacks.

    Hope it helps?

    Thanks a lot,

You can try Spammer Blocker instead. This plugin is much better than WP-Ban because it is semi-automatic. There is no need to boringly copy and paste IP addresses. Just mark spammer's comment as a spam and the bad guy is banned until the end of the world.

I feel like the only way to prevent it is to use captcha or manually approve comments

That's not good enough anymore for me. You would think that if you make it difficult, and continuously delete spam that certain spammers would just pick another target, but they don't.
I have had spammers work my site for days, using different email addresses, different IP addresses, changing or misspelling blocked words, and everything else just to try to create an account or leave one comment.

I have never seen anything more fascinating in my life as to watch a person waste so much time on one site AFTER they have been identified as a spammer and continuously kicked out.

They are truly not that smart. I mean seriously what kind of idiot would work that hard to make me report his website or affiliate link?
