Most newbies are confused and don't know what to do after installing their wordpress blog, this post will tell you some things you can do to have a better wordpress blog.

    1. Change the default wordpress username, this will prevent your blog from being hacked easily.
    2. Changed your permalinks structure - Wordpress's default permalink structure is not the best co change it to something like this /%postname%/ - This structure is one of the best and is also very SEO friendly.
    3. Install a spam filter, you can refer to this thread for more on that.
    4. Install a good looking theme - you can install thesis wordpress theme (from diythemes.com) and the thesisplay skin (see how it looks here).
    5. Install w3 total cache - this will help you make your site load faster and will also prevent your server from crashing.
    6. Install google analytics or any stats tracking plugin.
    7. Promote your blog (You can download the free ebook from my signature on that - it is called the "ultimate traffic formula")

    Any other thing to add?

The username is not as important as the password.
    That needs to be a mix of a - z, A - Z, 0 - 9, and some characters such as ( ) # @ | & { } [ ] + ~
personally I would say no less than 15 characters long.

Nice basic tips. How important is it to change the username ?

Later on start adding All in One SEO pack and writing unique content is "the" most important thing to do. Dont forget to bookmarking your articles after they are posted in the wordpress blog ;)

The username is more important than the password because if they don't know your username, then your blog can NEVER be hacked - There is no need for password without a username.

    What do you think?

The username is very important because an hacker will have to know your username before your password can be effective. The default wordpress username is "admin", try to change it to something else - I mean create another administrator account and delete that (You can't change username in wordpress).

    Thanks a lot,

I think you are talking rubish and you dont know how hackers work.

Be it a password or a username they can both be hacked.

    All-In-One-Seo is totally unnecessary if you are using Thesis. The plugins I recommend are;
    AddToAny: Share/Bookmark/Email Button
    Akismet
    Cross-linker
    Deep Link Engine
    Global Translator
    Google XML Sitemaps
    MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer
    One Click Plugin Updater
    Robots Meta
    SEO Friendly Images
    SEO SearchTerms Tagging 2
    Simple CAPTCHA
    WPing.FM

I use this exact set in every blog I create. The combination of seo and traffic plugins gets the site indexed and tons of visitors flowing quick. With some fresh backlinks, I have had many blogs jump to the first page of google and stay there within days.

The last post is also the BEST of them all.
Just start posting and everything else will come with experience.

You could just as well generate tens / hundreds of visitors a day without any plugins at all.

I think that is the point when you should ask yourself about SEO, Widgets and other plugin related issues
