Phpbb or Mybb.. which one should i choose

Discussion in 'phpBB' started by *pushkar*, Jul 15, 2010.

I want to run free forum so i am going to either phpbb or mybb. I like both but i want

    1) Light weighted
    2) Faster
    3) Doesn't put much load on server
    4) Good Security

Mods and themes are not important for me. I have shared host and want that i can run light weighted software easily with average users online at a time

Both phpBB and MyBB are great secure and user friendly systems which will run comfortably on a shared hosting environment with a numerous amount of users online. However the core differences between phpBB and MyBB are:

phpBB has a wider range of styles and mods then MyBB (Pro for phpBB).
MyBB is more AJAX based whereas phpBB is not (Pro for MyBB).
phpBB has a bigger community therefore the support is somewhat better then that of MyBB's, however MyBB's support is still great (Slight pro for phpBB).
MyBB's mods are much easier to install then phpBB's mods (Pro for MyBB).
Both are GPL (Pro for both).

Those are only the core differences, of course there are a lot more. It's really up to you.

    Good luck!

As I said on The Admin Zone, both are covered on 3 and 4, but MyBB is a bit lighter and definitely easier to install plugins. All of them really just come down to personal opinions, other than Google SEO, which is one of the most important plugins on MyBB. To me, there's a lot of crappy MODs on phpBB. Took them forever to make a shitty quick reply years after everyone else did.

MyBB is definitely lighter and in my opinion, easier to integrate into an existing website.

phpBB is a most popular solution ans has a larger community, more plugins and themes.

Not to blow up my favorite software (MyBB) but if you want really lightweight you can try FluxBB too.
    http://fluxbb.org/

Of course it has minimal features but if your target is fast then it's probably a good bet.

I think for the most well-rounded software with features, security, and optimized then MyBB is the ticket.

You should do local test installations and view the admincp to see which is intuitive for you and has the features you may want.

I would go with phpBB simply because it is better supported should you ever need help.

MyBB for sure. Have you also looked at SMF?

Install all three and see which you like best. phpBB is pretty far behind (Horrid ACP, no ajax, no consideration for SEO, ...)

If you need a lot of support then the software isn't intuitive enough. If you need a lot of plugins then it doesn't have a lot of features built in.
