I still never said the industry wouldn't survive without marketing. You're putting words in my mouth.

That's why I asked the BMI/ASCAP question about whats included with the payments. That information isn't on google.

Get pamplets and advertising. Then get some gigs at bars and pubs to get the name out there. This can also be used to get the website name out there as well.

Ok, sorry..You said "there is nothing else". That would imply there is no marketing.

As for ASCAP and BMI payments, that is a very broad question. But maybe you mean performance statement?

The auto industry is all about cars, but that doesn't mean there is no marketing behind it.

It's not a broad question. It's called a Royalty Statement. The performance statement is just a sub part.

Well that's a very different industry to music. The music industry has very little price difference between brands (labels) regardless of quality (bar old music or people trying to break in), whereas the auto market has price extremes. Someone will buy a (perceived) lower quality brand car because the price is right.

That proves the point even more that the music industry is all about marketing! When your market is all about customer emotion and nothing to do with price (which is very indicative of the music industry), it is essential to market well to reach your audience.

You should plan first then launch the singer
    1. Get attractive creatives
    2. Launch a Website with all info, tracks etc.,
    3. Advertise on Forums related to the niche type of music
    4. Offer Free Downloads on websites of the tracks
    5. Run some offers and see people coming in and participating in it.

No, really?! I thought CDs were made from old car parts and record labels made tires. Someone may buy the car cause it's cheap, but many don't. If it's a good car they like and they want it, they will ignore the price tag.

I wont argue that marketing can make a song popular, but it's not needed if it's a good song. You don't need marketing to have hit song.

Music is all about talent, as many bands know that give their music away for free.

Here is how a band can have a hit song WITHOUT marketing.... A DJ is handed a CD from a friend, he listens to it and instantly loves it. He decides to air it a few times. People call in saying they like it and then other stations start playing it. Done, you have a hit song without marketing.

Now, I know the music industry very well. I know that marketing plays a key role for MANY artists, but if the song is a good song, it will be come a hit on it's own without spending a dime on marketing if you don't want to.

You do not need marketing to have a hit song.

Yes I agree that does happen. Some artists are very lucky in that respect. But you must agree that this is not the norm.

Most artists that are successful get there through good marketing, either by the artist themselves or a record label and/or agent that picks them up.

Thanks all.. I think the best way to start with youtube and promoting it via social bookmarking and facebook. We are not much into making music sales but the image of the singer. So that many people know him. Building a reputation online. I am starting up with Facebook, myspace, hi5 and Orkut to promote youtube video. I will post results soon here..

Hey, everybody. This is my maiden post - hope it doesn't suck.

Your marketing plan starts with some evaluation of the singer's past. What gigs have they done? Who went to these gigs? Who showed up that liked the singer's sound/look/stage presence?

You need to find your singer's niche before anything else. You can go the most "general" route with pop - but you'll have tons of competition. It might actually be best if you think about a very specific group of people who seem to like your singer's style.

I'll give you an example - rage against the machine. Who likes (or at least liked) Rage? Probably people who enjoy loud, aggressive music. Probably young men who either don't care what the world thinks, or wish they could live that way. It's part catharsis, and part fantasy about being a revolutionary. This is about a thousand miles away from the teeny bopper set.

Once you know your singer's best customers (the people who'll actually buy their tracks), you can figure out where these people go, where they look for their next concert, where they buy tracks, etc. I'd be happy to help you with this - music rules!

If you think my advice is helpful, PM me and we can talk through a marketing plan, and discuss fair compensation for my services.
