The traffic/visitors who landed on your site through a referral/redirector is termed as referring traffic. These visitors are mainly the visitors of another sites who have been referred to your site through a back link on their pages.

If the visit is not direct and it is not from SERP, then it is from some other website which have a link to your page. Any other site have a link to your page is called a refferring site.

Referring traffic is the traffic that come from the sites that link to your site. It is one of the most important traffic source except search engine. You can view which sites bring huge traffic to your site in Google analytics's referring traffic, so that you can promote your product on those sites more frequently.

There are 3 kinds of traffic which is generated through SEO or any PPC for every site.

Direct Traffic - When somebody knows your site URL and open and access it.

Search engine traffic - When somebody visited on your site through search engines which may be paid(sponsored link) or free.

Referral - When somebody visited your site via any other site where you have backlink on that site.

I hope this will help you

Analytics can tell you about your website, and one of those things is where your visitors arrive from.
