Maybe you are confused as to what a hit song is. Hit song and bad song are not antonymous…They are completely different.

A hit song (otherwise known as a hit single) is generally a single that makes it into the top 40 on the charts. Obviously this could be localized (as most countries have a local chart) or more global (meaning that it makes the top 40 in a large number of countries charts).

Yes there are thousands of artists recording at home themselves and I know many bands who do this and, as you say, “make great sounding albums”. But again, how many have hit songs?!

And no, the music industry is not all about talent... Unfortunately...

Some hit songs are bad, really bad.

I'm not confused. You don't need to be in the top 40 to have a hit song. I listen to hit songs at home, which most of them haven't been in the top 40. The billboard charts are for industry whores, and most of the songs are crap.

Music industry is all about talent. Artists who fall for the industry traps are suckers.

@ zhoom, you're thinking of chart hits. They are completely different ;-)

    From Wikipedia:
By definition you are not listening to a hit song unless it is a "widely played or big selling song".

Again, the music industry is not all about talent. Ask anyone who has worked in the industry. Like I said, this is a shame, but it is a fact...

The most successful artists in the music industry, like any other industry, usually have good marketing.

    Don't think so...Anyway, I have a view, you have a view...

I was a professional musician for about 10 years so do know a fair bit about the industry...But let's agree to disagree :)

Do you believe everything you read online? LOL.

I know thousands of songs that have been widely played and sold big that were never in the top 40. Thousands.

The music industry is all about talent.

Mmm...ok...you obviously don't care about facts and don't listen to other people who clearly have a better knowledge of the industry than you...Fortunately I never have to work with you.

What facts? You haven't stated any.

LOL. You think you have better knowledge huh? You were just a musician.

I know I have better knowledge, not because I was a "just a musician" but based on the comments you made.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue over who knows more. The fact is, any business, whether it music, SEO or porn will benefit from good marketing.

The music industry is a fickle business where, yes I agree you must have talent, but you also need a look, a sound, a market, something unique and YES good marketing!

Yes, you can be successful without any marketing...but these cases are rare. Even the small bands down at your local pub use marketing techniques. Many have facebook pages, small websites, use youtube/myspace to show videos/music, advertise in local papers or even just put up posters. That is all marketing and the music industry would not survive without it.

    @ zhoom

Musicians are at the bottom in the industry, live musicians at least. Studio musicians are definitely higher up. Which are you?

I have been both, but am neither currently.

So who is at the top? Record labels? Producers? What do they do? They market bands!!

LOL. Ok, tell me how you prove a service mark is in use for a band with the USPTO.

It's whomever owns the rights to the music.

    Producers don't market bands.

I don't know how to do that. Anyway, why would "just a musician" need to do that? Especially one that is not under the US patent office jurisdiction?

Some do, some don't...The fact still remains...the music industry would not survive without marketing. Dispute that as you will, but please tell me a band/artist/singer who has been successful without marketing.

You said you knew more about the music industry, I want to know if that's true. Do you even know who Bill Putnam is? What does API and UAD stand for? What is Neve's first name? What company sells Pro Tools? What country makes the Trident console?

My thinking is you're just a musician ;-)

Do you even know what a patch bay is? If you've been in a studio, you should at least know that.

Maybe you do know more about a few audio engineering specific things. Maybe I'm just a musician and it sounds to me like you're just a recording engineer. And maybe you do know more about some areas of the music industry. I'm sure I could ask you a whole range of other questions that you couldn't answer, but again....That is not the point.

My argument, that you seem to keep sidestepping, is that the music industry could not survive without marketing. Feel free to dispute that.

Since you're just a musician, I wanted to give you some "professional musician" questions that you might know. Since you don't know that, who was on the cover of the first rolling stone magazine? What does Taxi do? What does BMI and ASCAP stand for, and how often do they payout? What's included with BMI/ASCAP payments? What company prints electronic musician? These are very simple music industry questions.

I never said the industry wouldn't survive without marketing. Dispute that.

    You said:
    Point disputed...

As for your questions..What would answering them prove? That I can Google as well as you can?
