Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 - Not Genuine

Not sure if I've posted this in the correct area.

Here's my problem, I bought my computer a couple of years ago and it had Windows XP Pro on it when I bought it, it was a new computer. The other day I tried to go into a website and it wouldn't let me and told me I needed javascript, it then directed me to microsoft website to download it.

When I tried to download, it came up and said my windows is not a genuine copy so I can't download. I never received a cd for windows when I purchased the computer. Is there anything I can do to get my windows authenticated or am I going to have to purchase it?

Thanks for that though but I don't think it will solve my problem now, I think I stuffed up, I tried to authorise my windows by putting in another product key and it came back product key incorrect and now is giving me 30 days to activate, so I'm assuming after 30 days it will close me down or something

I have searched, the only ones I've come up with so far either haven't worked, or have trojan horse viruses on them.

I probably will have to buy a new one although I was hoping not to as I can't really afford it

Why not switch to linux! It's free, and most distros have guis.

If you purchased your computer and XP was included in the purchase price, you should call up the shop and complain. You should also have been given a product key.

If XP was just a 'bonus' then you should buy it. I don't understand why people jump at posts and preach for ppl to support the developer who wrote that nice script but when it comes to MS, it's go get a crack for it instead. So what if MS makes a bit of money. They deserve it.

The shop you have bought your computer from ask them to give you a genuine key or try seeking help from a friend or relative. Otherwise I think you will have to buy a new XP.

Here is Microsoft's recommendations for problems like this:

What if my copy of Windows or Office fails the validation process or I believe I have received pirated software?

A: In either case, Microsoft recommends the following actions:
See your reseller and ask for genuine Microsoft software, using the report provided during the validation session for support. The report explains why your system was unable to validate and provides instructions for further follow-up.

Visit the Microsoft How to Tell website to learn how to recognize genuine Microsoft software.
Purchase a genuine copy of Windows from Microsoft on line, or from your local reseller.

    Thanks guys
I think I'm going to buy it, and not from the $50 guy, I'm not that stupid, that does have scam written all over it.
Microsoft charge $238 for genuine authentication. But I'll have to bite the bullet and buy it I think

Try ebay, they sell ginune XP for low prices.

I just wonder where they get these XPs from but I am certain they are legal.

Yea try to go wit something else before you purchase from microsoft. No matter what you do, they're gonna be the most expensive.

However, even if you do that you may run into the same problem that says, "Invalid code" cus your OS may have a particular Product key attached to it that only microsoft can change. I mean there are other ways of getting around this but it up to you if you wanna try those ways. Send an e-mail to . They have some times answers there that can help you.

I'd like to suggest you to buy a original Microsoft Windows XP.
It will cost you arround 3000/- INR but worth. If you want to wait for somedays say, till last week of Novembar, you can buy a Windows Vista as MS gonna publicly release it then.

Best will be buy Windows XP as vista will have 4 Diffrent versions and it will be very heavier for systems lower than 512. Also as soon as vista will be launched there will be a price deduction in windows XP prices.

I think XP pro is the best platform at the moment. Vista sounds nice but theres alot to be proven yet, they cant possibly make it bulletproof. I recomend buying a full version of windows xp pro, back up your data then reformat your drive and reinstall the new software.
