Before anyone starts saying i am spamming please i am NOT a spammer and just want to give advice as i have set up my new outsourcing SEO business and just want to know what you PRO's think of this DMOZ guidance ive got:

The Importance of the Open Directory (DMOZ)

    PLEASE READ EXTREMELY CAREFULLY

There is something that you can now do to help speed up the submission process, but it is critical that you get this bit right, so please take your time, read and then take some quiet time out to do it properly.

The Open Directory Project which as an incredible PR9 www.dmoz.org is probably one of the single most important directories in which to get a listing.
Not every website is granted a listing, and those that are have to fit into the special set of rules as determined by that directory and be a quality website offering quality and unique content.
YOU have to submit to this directory yourself as the titles and description fields have to be very good, which can also be subjective.

    The Open Directory Project offers guidance on how to increase you chances of getting a directory listing;

Adding your to the Open Directory - http://dmoz.org/add.html
How to write Titles and Description - http://dmoz.org/guidelines/describing.html

    1. Try to find a category that is the most relevant for your listing

    2. Where ever you can try to choose a category that has an editor - (editors name is at the bottom of the category page if it has one. Or will say 'volunteer to edit this category' if not. Categories without editors may never be reviewed for a listing).

    3. Try to find a category that does not have many listings (less than 100).

    4. Do not try to con the editors. For example; If you are regional business, do not submit it to a national category.

    5. Do not submit more than once as this drop your application back to the bottom of the list.

Word of warning: Do not underestimate just how important The Open Directory Project can be to you business. It could provide up to 90% of all the traffic to Google for your chosen keywords.

So treat this directory with the greatest respect, read all the guideline, and then take your time to submit it properly. Most important of all, is DO IT WHEN YOU HAVE NO OTHER PRESSURES.

To see just how important The Open Directory Project could be, see http://www.bruceclay.com/searchengin...nshipchart.htm and use your mouse to see the relationships.

I have to agree, sites take way to long to get entered.. And they don't accept enough editors... So what if I have a site for the category I want to edit... Shouldn't that just mean that I know more about the topic...

It's ridiculous 1 catagory I tried to submit to (which my site worked very well for) had about 1/5 of the sites in the category saying that they were no longer going to keep it update (aka they're on hiatus)...

Good to know I can't get in but they're in forever....

It has nothing to do with patience. I think some categories are just edited by .... <- fill in your own.
I have submitted my travel site (lots of unique content) over a year ago. I think it really depends on your category. Some have decent editors and some don't. Simple as that.

"The Open Directory Project which as an incredible PR9"... this is the homepage more probably you get some PR3-PR5 from the specific category page.

"Do not try to con the editors. For example; If you are regional business, do not submit it to a national category"... they will spontaneously change your listing from category you thoight it suits the best to category they think it suits the best.

"It could provide up to 90% of all the traffic to Google"... it provides only minimum traffic, most of this traffic just because there are lots of DMOZ clones that are visited more than DMOZ. Anyway, Google seems to use the title and description of your DMOZ listing in certain cases.

"So treat this directory with the greatest respect, read all the guideline, and then take your time to submit it properly. Most important of all, is DO IT WHEN YOU HAVE NO OTHER PRESSURES"... OK, but actually, submission to DMOZ is similar to submission to any other directory.

I do not underestimate DMOZ and always submit my sites to it. It gives me in return some fair link with PR4 (even though I am not a friend of advanced PR calculations). On the other hand, do not overestimate it, it´s just another directory, human edited (means it combines both good and bad of both machines and humans).

Pf. I have spent quite some time studying their guidelines, spent some time to find the right category (since my travel guides are global and not regional its not too far down in hierarchy) and submitted. Over a year later and nothing ever happened.
It is my firm belief, that you cannot get listed in a decent category anymore. If I submit to some cat. way down in hierarchy I might have better chances, unfortunately this is not where the site belongs.
I have come to accept that I have to live without getting a DMOZ listing, although there is absolutely no reason why my site should not get approved.
I think DMOZ has some serious issues.
Someone else said it right (somewhere else on DP)
New enthusiastic editors get very low level cat. Only seniority can get you a higher level cat and by that time most editors don't care anymore. I may just resubmit it to some category way down in the hope they move it to the correct spot.

Not true. Really. They do on some categories, but not on others. My travel site ran for almost as long as it existed without even adsense on it. I am surely not making any money on it and I am providing a service. But no listing.
