Are .NET Domains Worth Using?

I am building a site currently, and I cannot purchase the domain for the .com address.

The person who owns the .com address hasn't done anything to their site, it's just a blank page, no index, nothing, and it's been this way for a while. There is not much competition, and the keyword I am using is high ranking.

For exmaple, their domain is dogreview.com, can I use dogreview.net and still make a decent profit in the long run?

Strange to know that .com is expensive than .net anyways buying .net is always a good choice its comes within category of 2nd most used Top Level Domains section! so if you think that .net is cheap so go ahead grab it :)

Go for it. As jezzz already said, it's still in the list of TLDs.

.net domains are often overlooked by people being narrow minded and only wanting .com's.

Very often, .net has a better ring to it than .com anyway... If you think your domain sounds good with .net, then so will most people ;)

Like you've mentioned, as long as the .com is not competing in the same niche, you're good to go. If you get some traction with your .net, you should make an offer to the .com owner.

Yes, why not? As long as you have a TLD, it's fine. And .com and .net are considered equal, so don't worry about getting a .net domain. :)

Thanks for the advice, this opens me up to a lot of better domains that I was planning on using.

Yeah I have used .nets to great effect. I don't have too much trouble getting a .net domain name ranked on the first page of Google for my selected keyword. I also think psychologically people respond quite well to .net domain names. I think a .com is a little better and always preferred, but .net works and there is nothing wrong with it at all in my opinion.

I just feel that if I was to use a .net domain for my portfolio, that it would not look as professional to the average user, who don't understand that .net is still a TLD?

www.myname.com is taken but not being used, so if I was to use www.myname.net that would still look professional?

Otherwise I can ass something like www.mynamedesigns.com or www.mynameonline.com?

there used to be some debate as to whether search engines took ".coms" more seriously than other TLDs, but now I for one, aren't so sure.

What you DO run the risk of is if you build up a good site, whoever owns the dot com may step in and spoil it for you because frankly, .coms still seem more brandable than other domains at the mo.

I.e. the .com owner, if he sniffs money in the niche thanks to your efforts, may steal it all away from you by building up his own site. Just my 2c.

If I know what keyword I am going to target I would rather have an exact match keyword domain that is .net versus a .com that is not. However, beyond that, I would try to stick with .com primarily just because it is easier for people to remember and get to.

Have you thought about my-name.com if you're worried about branding a .com?

I thought that using hypens was a huge "no-no"? Specifically for my portfolio website.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Generally, hyphens are bad when the domain becomes spammy, like keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.com.

If you don't want the hyphen, buy the .net. If you don't want the .net, then get creative and start brainstorming. Just get a domain and start moving forward. In-action kills.
