Assuming you/i had a domain which the homepage had quite a few backlinks and ranked well for the main keywords! Would the internal pages rank better than having a domain which didnt rank well or have many backlinks? What i mean is do they have to have a link from the homepage, to rank well or does the domain automatically rank them well because the actual domain is doing well!?
Depends on the age and number of links. If it builds some authority in it's niche, the homepage will carry weight to the other pages. If it's a newer site (< 18 months) links to individual pages count more.
You're talking about backlinks; backlinks build PageRank; PageRank is not assigned to a domain. However, if your homepage has a high pagerank and you link to deep internal pages those pages will rank higher (because they're getting some of that link juice). There's no way pagerank will get to those internal pages without a link (I'm not sure about trust or authority).
It will be beneficial to link your internal pages to your homepage, but your internal pages' SERP doesn't only based on that. You must link build your internal pages with their assigned keywords.
Having links from your homepage to your inner pages is standard, not that really a factor in ranking. Inner pages tend to rank more than their own homepage. I have a blog all about lyrics, it does not rank fairly enough for my main homepage keywords but ranks good enough for target keyword specific pages.
Build links to all your pages if you can. I have an inner page that gets more traffic than my home page, and I have a lot of links to that page, including one from the home page.
Linkings between home page and inner pages will increase the rankings of the inner pages also with time the link juice will spread to the inner pages.
Do you have backlinks generated to these specific pages as well... or they derive strength simply from the efforts/backlinks to your home page? Regards, RightMan
Well since the site i am talking about is a service many forums link to the service directly and therefore for some keywords that page ranks better then the homepage
