What Counts As A Backlink? How Do I Get More Backlinks? What Should I watch out for?

Discussion in 'Google' started by Asdff1818, Jul 7, 2010.

Hi, I know that Facebook, Twitter, and etc don't count, but how do I know what does, and what doesn't? (What is Nofollow, and what is Dofollow)

Any tips on getting backlinks? How many would be unnatural to Google?

One more question: What are some things that I should watch out for with Google, duplicate content is one, seeming unnatural is another thing, any other things?

    Thanks in advance.

A backlink is a link to your website from another website that can be followed by a search engine.

Nofollow is a link that has nofollow html tags around it so that search engines do not follow them. dofollow does not have this tag.

You can see if a site has/blog/forum has nofollow links by using a browser add on. I use Chrome SEO for google chrome.

Get backlinks by commenting on forums (such as this one), blogs, requesting link exchanges with related sites, submitting articles to article websites, guest blogging on other blogs and submitting your site to directories.

Google looks for consistent backlinks built over time. If you were to go and spam 1000 blogs with comments in 2 hours, that would be frowned upon, although some people use robots to do this...not recommended. Try to build links consistently on related websites where possible.

Things to watch out for in google: flash content (google can't read this), duplicate content, frames, hidden links (like text same color as bg), filling your site with too many keywords, linking to bad websites (malware, illegal activities etc), malware on your site, duplicate title tags and/or descriptions, automated content (ie content created by robots).

    Hope that helps :)

Thank you, that was very helpful. Let's say that I post in multiple threads in the same forum with my link in the signature, or submit different articles to the same article website and all of them with my link in it, does in count as different links? How many backlinks would you recommend getting each day, when a website was just launched? A number that Google would think seems natural.
    Thanks again!

A very good response, in fact. Forum backlinks don't seem to work as well as they once did - perhaps the engines now automatically discount them.

    You're welcome!

The number of backlinks per day is a very contentious issue and I don't profess to know the answer.

I have heard people say don't build anymore than 100% or 50% of your sites links in a month. i.e, if you site has 100 backlinks, don't build anymore than 100 (or 50) per month, then gradually build up.

Some people say to keep the number sustainable so you can build the same number every month for a long period of time.

Some say it doesn't matter how many you build as long as they are quality (related content etc).

Some say look at viral campaigns where backlinks could grow from 1 to 10,000 in a number of days and not get penalized.

My theory is do what seems right. If you feel like you are spamming, then you probably are. If you are trying to 'trick' Google, then you will probably be penalized eventually.

I think that if the amount of backilinks, and the place that it is coming from would make sense that it is coming from people recommending your website, then Google will not penalize you, but if it seems too unnatural, and seems impossible that these are people recommending your website, then Google will probably not like it, right? All Google really wants is that you are being recommended by others.
    Thank you.

Yes you are pretty much correct.

Remember that Google's overall goal is to give the searcher the most relevant and highest quality search results.

    *edit

Well I assume that's what they want to do...I do not work for Google and noone will ever know Google's true intention...Maybe it is really to take over the world?? Or have they already done that? :)

Just comment on blogs that you read often, be an active part of forums, I've also found a good way of building backlinks is by guest posting on other people's blogs. =].

Facebook and Twitter are both nofollow...Not useful for SEO directly, but can be useful to drive traffic to your site.

By just searching on google, you can see thousands of 'Do Follow' blogs, forums, submission directories..etc. Make your comments or postings on these sites to get back links.

Yes,dofollow links will count as a backlink to your site and you can make comments on forums which will also count as a link to your site.
