May be you have a bad link neighborhood or some of your link may be devalued by Google for some reasons. Check your partner sites and let me know.

If you are doing link exchanges / reciprocal linking, make sure your link partners are still linking back to you. If you purchased links, and Google some how figured it out that the site sold links, they can be devalued. Also the best way to count your backlinks isn't Google, it would be through the Yahoo! Site Explorer.

    Build links through natural way.

Like Forum Posting, article writing, directory submission and blog commenting.

    Avoid link exchange for sometime.

Only do 3-way link exhchanges or more. Don't do reciprocal, google will discount them.

Use Yahoo Site explorer to check your links, google doesn't give you complete information.

    Hi,

If you're site is new do not build links so fast as Google might see a red flag on your site. Build links slowly and naturally and make sure you get links from different types of sites and different IPs.

You might be getting backlinks from places where the link gets removed after time.

Get links from blogs - they tend to remain intact :)

I'd keep a list of the major places where you backlinked and then check them every few weeks. Also run a backlink check on your site every so often. Check the links that pop up--the links that usually come up are slightly outdated so it lets you click them to see if they presently still link.

    Hi,

I think this would be a normal issue for back links since your linking sources might be also de-indexed by search engines. Generally speaking, you need to increase your backlinks in a sustaining way for SERP purpose.

    Have a nice day,

Yeah, those are good places where you can build links. You can exchange links but make sure you won't over do it.

There are several reason why your backlinks drops:

    1. Backlink checker problem
It depending on the tool that you used to check baclinks. Each backlink checker tools will show different results. Recently, Google done some modification and some bounce and drops happened in Google Webmaster. The same thing can be happened to other checker tools too.

    2. Removal of your link
If your link is on sidebar or you manage to get it from link exchanges, the blog admin might remove those old links on their blog to give way to new links. So, your site might be a victim there.

    3. Top Commentators
There are also other possibilities like, if you manage to get on "Top Commentators" on blogs that have this widget on that gives sidewide backlink will give a boost in your backlink count if you manage to rank on this list. But, most of the site have weekly or monthly reset and the list will be empty to give new commentators chance to get on the list. You might lose some backlinks from there too.

    4. Site shut down
Some of the sites that you might have gather backlinks from using blog commenting , forum posting, guest posting, etc might have been shut down sold out. The new owner might not interested in older contents and completely removed everything on it.

Well, these are the points that I can think of for now.
