They are both very similar for SEO, as in my experience Google treats anything within a URL equally, giving greater value to that which is closest to the domain name itself.

I suppose it matters more with what you are going to do next, if you are having sub folders with more content, like ...net/red/blue/green etc, then I would go with the subdomain.

sub-domains are not good for seo. if you want seo benefit, then use sub-folder which is considered as part of the site where sub-domains are considered as separate sites.

you can use something like url.com/cars/filename.xxx which will be seo friendly

Sub domains are treated as separate sites, so you will have to do link building for each one of them, to get them ranking properly. While subfolders, would get link benefit from the ones pointing at inner pages and the main domain.

use the exact keyword you are wanting to rank for, do not include all unnecessary wordings or attributes and sub-folders are better for SEO.

according to me deeplinks are far better then subdomains....you have to do lot of extra efforts to give ranking to your subdomains as subdomains treated as different domain ..

Actually in my opinion, it's not true, seo friendly urls matter for the dynamic urls, where string comes from the database and a big url is generated. So there it is advised to make that user friendly and seo friendly.

When we use a sub-domain over the main domain, it is treated as a different url not a site from the search engine point of view. We have to treat it like a new one url and have to make all the efforts for this sub-domain including all the On-page and off-page optimization efforts.

While using the same thing in the sub-folder over the same domain, it is just the same site including various categories and pages or sub-folders. All the efforts made of the site remains only for that site.

You can see the live example of it on this Forum - Digitalpoint.com, when you go to the digitalpoint.com, it shows own it's efforts apart from it's sub-domain "forums.digitalpoint.com". When you get something back for sub-domain, it would benefit that only and also some fraction to your main domain too.

But this is the fact, when your sub-domain is getting popularity or got some benefits, it surely benefit to your main domain, means that may be not the complete benefit but also some good part will also go for the main domain. When your sub-domain is promoting during while your main domain is also promoting. There should be purely theme base sub-domain related to your main domain to get more exposure and proper link hierarchy also matter here so that visitors can move to your domain and sub-domain from one to other, if both are relavant.
