I think you need to know what a backlink is first. I would do some searching on the internet if I were you, but primarily a backlink is just a website with a link back to your own website. You can do this in numerous ways. You might look into article marketing, social bookmarking, blog commenting, link wheels. Those are just something things to search on. I don't really specifically recommend those, they are just techniques people use to get backlinks.

Not quite sure what you are asking. Via blog commenting, forum sigs and so forth you create a backlink. You need a basic knowledge of HTML to do this, or do it using an anchor text generator. Sorry, I can't leave links yet, so just Goolge "anchor text generator." I'll use on when I get sick of writing out the code.
You can do it by yourself, do a link search at your competitors site at google by link: www. mycompetitor.com and contact those site owners. simple and straight forward
