    MYSQL s..cks in many aspects

The thing you said in the second paragraph... Secretly ;-), I use it with the same success for 3 months already.
According to a conspiracy theory, now, we both should shut up on this and get to real work.

Dropped drastically! Now slowly coming back to normal.
New algo is based on showing serps based on most recently published information, content or article. Then, ofcourse authority come handy along with that.

How about SERP for kewords like "Paris real estate", when its hard to provide recently published information daily? So on the main page of a website in such a niche there is only some general info and a search form available.
I do not think this new Google rule that you mentioned can be successfully applied here.

Or very static stuff that doesn't change - I have two dictionaries, how am I supposed to update my entry for "hexagon" frequently? Or my page that has all the times tables on? They go on the internet, they don't change once they're there. Used to rank well, now I'm bumped off by all these stupid Yahoo answers pages and irrelevant blogs.

I've been searching for PHP/perl information for my new website and the top hits are recent blogs and people asking questions that haven't been answered yet, and the actual information I need is buried on page 3 of the results because it is an old, quality article. It is REALLY annoying.

Whatever they did to their algorithm, it sucks and they should undo it and actually give us the closest RESULTS we are looking for not bias towards recently written drivel.

Beginning of March everything went to hell and hasn't recovered since. Traffic from thousands to a couple hundreds a day. Search results are irrelevant and crappy. You have to wonder whatta hell those engineers at Google are thinking! They are destroying what was a good SE. Reminds me of eBay.

This sums up Google's search engine now.

    User Search Term: Gay Dog
    Google's Search Results: Duane Chapman

For God's sake Google! Who are those morons running that engine! God damn!

Same thing happened to me in March. Results and google referrals were down 60% and have been since March 15th.

When I logged into G's WMT the number links pointing to my site were about 81,000 at the time of the drop. The number of links kept dropping. Last week they were at 31,000 total links. Results were consistently shitty.

Then out of no where Sunday night my rankings went through the roof. I have a busy site and the server was running hotter than ever. In G's WMT it lists 923,000+ links now.

The sites that were beating our ranks since March were mostly garbage in comparison to our site. Some of our competitors that had pretty good content took the dive with us too.

I'm guessing that the theory of the rotating index might have some merit. At least from my experience. The competitors that took a dive with us are back now too.

Hei guys, thanks for your fantastic input on the problem. Things are getting more and more clear now. I am planning to summarize them this week.

You have got the point here. I hope Google is not really going to give priority to an arbitrary new content.

pjman, I am really glad that things are getting normal to you.
Moreover, I am not worried about the rotating index hypothesis. I think, that was just a bug solving, when Google was getting back a bit in his algo, once they saw what kind of mess they have produced.

Thanks George. Great thread. Best one I ever participated in.

Looking at other sites that recently had a jump between myself and my friends. I think it was a devalued link issue on my bigger sites. I have two friends that had a similar occurrence. They are in totally different niches. The only analytical commonality we share is that our normal link count dropped drastically in G's WMTs. Then further more and then in bounced back to 5 to 6 times what it was before the problem. Then Bam, our ranks came flying back.

I lost a lot of my indexed pages too. The pages that were deindexed were either too similar to other pages or didn't contain enough content. Internal linking in a natural way helps too.

Just noticed that in the last two months, my major site got even better positions than before MayDay, for those keywords which dropped significantly in May...

MayDay changes get completely rolled back?

My traffic has increased slightly--I am getting way more impressions, and some more clicks than before. Before I only had a couple of clicks, but now I am getting several dozen per day.

Same here. Results are 20% better than ever since June 27th.

I guess they realized it was a botched algorithm change. I know that the searches I do normally for just personal stuff have gotten a lot better. They ditched the whole twitter thing too. Where they list related tweets at the top of the results. That was the worst thing I have ever seen any search engine do. Talk about not even relevant? You would search for a type of camera or whatever and you would get a result that Cindy tweeted that Sarah got the same camera you want. I mean WTF? Hope they fired that jackass that dreamed that up.
