Am I Being Cheated by My DSL Provider?

    Hello folks,

My internet connection is currently with Verizon DSL which said Download speed up to 1MB/sec.

However, everytime I download something the max speed TOPS at 90/kbs and can't go beyond that.

Downloading a file around 90/kbs is not even close to 10% of the 1MB capacity they enlisted or promised.. so what the hell.. am I being ripped off or what?

I have Verizon DSL too and the thing is, is that it's download speed "up to" 1MB/sec. That means there's no guarantee that it will always be that fast, just sometimes you can get to 1MB/sec. So technically no you're probably not getting ripped off.

Why don't you just change service?

This is not true at all, its roughly 1 mb /8. so 125 kbps.
I got 30 mbps and i download with max 3.75.

I'm really not sure what you're debating here. But when I was ordering my Verizon service they clearly stated that the speeds were not guaranteed to be that fast all the time. It was merely stating the capabilities of the service you were ordering. They get you with the fine print.

The catch point is the word "up to". Most of the ISPs use this fine print (not always! they advertise it in bold letters; we only fail to understand it!!) to get away from being questioned. Even my download speed is just 1/10th of what my ISP has promised. Time to reconcile :D

It says "UP TO" and not exactly 1MB/sec. It usually is shared with other users so you don't get the exact 1MB/sec.

Why don't you contact your service provider and point out this problem. Then, threaten them that you'll change over to their competitor's service if it is not fixed.

    Well, i think that is correct 1 mega bits per second / 8 (1 byte = 8 bits ) = 128 Bytes per seconds
but this is in idea world.
Add some loses due to internet lan-card itself and and even the length of the wires effects

90 bytes per second for speed 1 mega bits per second it is very fair enough i guess.
