Is Gmail Chat Encrypted?

Discussion in 'Google' started by grazie_web, Sep 19, 2006.

    Good day! :)

I'm just wondering if Gmail chats are encrypted? Does the message or chats done there may be viewed on a database that uses gmail chat? Or is there any software that can browse or monitor your chats?

    Thanks for reply.:p

I think chats are only encrypted when you access gmail via ssl.

If you browse to gmail via https then the requests are encrypted. Otherwise plain text packets going back and forth. Any packet sniffer can see your chats in plain text.

Tested this and if you are not connecting to gmail via ssl then the packets are clear to view for anybody that cares to sniff them out.

Chats are only encrypted over a secure socket.

What does encryption matter when all the information you share on G is archived and can be viewed "internally" at will by G employees?

There is no privacy I tell ya!

Regular Gmail packets contain plain text - no encryption whatsoever unless you access via https.

    Hi RedCardinal..:)

Ok, you said that any packet sniffer can see your chats in plain text. Here's my addtional question, what if a company uses a proxy server?(PROXY SERVER-is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services.) is there any possiblity that it has a sniffer packet used?

    Thanks for the soon response.:p

Although I'm no security guru. Based on your question I would think that if you don't want prying eyes in ur messages, i would forgo using pc at work.

Most corp networks are going to store logs. Take a look at your company's internet policy to see what they are and aren't checking.

You would have to ask someone who knows HTTP protocols pretty well, but I think that if you access G via SSL (even through a proxy) you are probably safe enough. Again I'm not an expert on HTTP so don't take this as gospel :)

I concur with RedCardinal. The only way to can insure privacy is to utilize a VPN service and get in the habit of using it ALL of the time... People need to get in the mindset of securing all of their personal data to include communications, just look at what has happened with the ex-CIA Director David Petraeus.....
