To some degree, as G uses the description tag to display in their listings. Keywords, I somehow doubt it, but I always chuck a few in just in case.

And this guy, folks, is advertising seo services in his sig.
Look - here's an article from the Official Google Webmaster Central blog
It's called "Google does not use the keyword meta tag in web ranking"
    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html
I'm guessing that means, Google does not use the keyword meta tag in web ranking, what do you reckon, 'genuineseo'?

No, according to what I know, most popular search engines have paid no attention to meta tags. You see, many webmasters use as many as keywords to improve their site ranking, so, Google and other search engines have found the abuse in such a situation.

Very few meta tags counts in case of Google. Meta title and meta description only works. But for other search engines the tags still counts.

The meta keywords are still read by search engines, as last I checked, google is not the only search engine.

Since I want you to do your research, check out the protocol for ranking on the Chinese search engine that is as big as google

    No more important as previously
Search engine technology now is good enough to cache the keyword without the help from meta tag

Title tag is the only relevant tag for Google. It doesn't give important to description or keywords tag. Though I think other search engines like Yahoo and Bing still gives importance to description tag and keywords tag.

On each new page, I always add a meta Description tag and a meta Keywords tag.

    1) The meta Description's text is likely (not certain, though) to show up under the blue link in the search results. That is important and gives me some control over what text appears in the SERPs.

    2) It only takes me about 60 seconds to add a meta Keywords tag. Even though it seems that most search engines now ignore it, I'm willing to "waste" those 60 seconds to add a meta Keywords tag, just in case some search engine(s) may still use it.

I agree, even if Google doesn't use it there are other uses for it such as Yahoo, Bing, Alexa, etc. It takes 5 minutes so why not? :)

Apparently meta keywords still plays a (small) part in yahoo, possibly others.
I know Matt C says pretty clearly in his video that G dont use it, but who knows for sure.
G seems to be obsessed currently on the speed thing and removing any unused bytes...
so a possible reason to cut out unused meta tags (as well as having a higher % of content)

I was under the impression that the meta title was all but useless as the SERPS use the html title -
am I way off on that?

. Some says that meta tag are important and some says they are not. Yes it is true that the value of meta keyword has declined to a great extinct but still the description tag, nofollow tag, canonical tag etc. holds prime importance.

    Logic:
In SERP, all sites have the privilege to display it's title and description as their ad campaign. So even after ranking on SERP, user gets attracted towards the site will more appropriate title and description. Meta tag let's the site to make proper introduction to the search engine.
