Is I.E 6 Dying Out?

We currently support I.E 6 as a web browser but it throws up various different issues that are just a pain.

If you see these statistics: http://www.monthlyweb.co.uk/browser_statistics.php

It seems I.E 6 is becoming less and less used.

Is now the time to stop supporting I.E 6?

There only thing that has kept IE going for this long is because it comes pre-installed on most PCs. Chrome or Firefox are much better!

all of you are true and so is the fact that IE is still widely used...
IE is popular, and hardly matters, whether by chance, choice, compulsion or ignorance.
and if I dig deeper, I believe that I shall find that IE has a larger share of usage in one of the most competitive markets.

So I would better design with IE compatibility, for my clients :)
although personally, I am writing this on FF/Ubuntu, and wont use IE by choice.
Yeah but, I install IE and use it for testing designs.

I do agree with you bvraghav that really good code that is written should display ok with I.E 6 and it really shouldn't be seen as a burden.

    But...

I think dangerdiabolicks comment about it not being compliant with modern web standards swings it in the favour that to advance in the world wide web, its gotta be dropped!

Is it true that microsoft do not support it now?

Actually, I was amazed when I analized my site's visitors,
Internet Explorer was the most used, followed by Firefox, so
it is very, very used browser.

Yes, IE6 is dying out but, as dalebu says, it is still, unfortunately, in popular usage so you can't just say IE6 sucks and not bother to design for it if a large proportion of your visitors still use it, much as you'd like it to just completely... fade away ;-)

I run a popular UK business website and our browser usage stats by version are (year to date)

    IE8 - 41%
    IE7 - 20%
    IE6 - 10%
    FF3.6 - 9%
    Chrome 4 - 4%
    FF3.5 - 4%
    Safari - 3%

    And so on...

So, as much as we'd all like to, we have to weigh up the design & development costs of continuing to support IE6 then make a judegement. I hate it, I think it sucks and have thought so for years but when 10% of users are still using it I have to at least make sure it works OK for them.
