I want to build directory and have problem to select domain name.
Some one recommended me to use the clone of some famuos directory domain name, for example DMOZ.info,alivedirectory.info and alivedir.info.

Can I use these domain names for my directory

    Thanks

That's not very ethical at all and could get you into alot of trouble. Do you really think you can make a name for yourself with someone else's name? Whoever gave you that advice, quit talking to them.

The people that register such domains are doing nothing but taking a big risk. They could certainly be sued. And what for? For the handful of visitors that migh accidentally mistake them for the real Alive or the real DMOZ? It's a very dumb move.

By the way, hotpop. For opinions of people here that have more of a legal expertise than I do, post this in the Legal Issues forum. You will get a great response there. :)

    WTF?? Is it christmas??
Imagine you are the owner of alivedirectory.com, and you stumble on this thread, where there is a guy that wants to use alivedirectory.info? How would you react?

    I'd be pissed.

Besides being unethical it just won't work, noone is going to pay to submit to a directory called copiedname.info just because copiedname.com is a well known directory. I am quite sure that Domain squatting doesn't work for sites that have a webmasters audience, it works for sites that have a lot of traffic from type ins from casual internet surfers. You will just waste your time, money, upset the owner of the directory and create a bad image for yourself.

    Just my 2 eurocents.

Thanks for everyone's comments. Aside from what everyone else has said, it's a really foolish idea. Imagine if you do build some popularity and someone decides to type in your address. Which do you think they are going to type in? Also, if you do a web search for the site name, I bet alivedirectory.com might appear first.
