As of an hour ago, there are tanks and soldiers on the street of Bangkok and they have declared a state of emergency. Things have been pretty tense here politically lately, so this could get interesting. Hmm, maybe I should pack my bag, haha..
You sound pretty chill for something that sounds pretty serious. I know nothing about what's going on over there but I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts and feelings about what's going on since you live there.
I just saw a bright red headline about this on Yahoo News. Tai Cat, try to stay safe and out of harms way if things turn ugly.
Military Coup in Thailand Please help us here in Thailand!! They just closed down all the TV stations they only play the song of the KING. At 23.00 local time they closed down ALL TV including CNN. If you hear anything on CNN or BBC thats not updated on the Website please post it here. Telephone and Internet is still working but i do not know for how long. I would advice ANY person thinking of travlling here DO NOT DO THAT now. I will keep you update from the inside and please keep us udpated on the outside.
Hmm, army has or is attempting to seize power from the Prime Minister, who is in New York at the UN. Thai society is pretty split down the middle in favor and against the PM (hmm, sounds like the US) so things could get violent. Will have to wait and see. The army has seized control of the all of the TV stations, so I am just waiting for the internet to be cut at any moment. I'm 3 hours outside Bangkok, so I am fine, but I have a lot of friends in BKK.
they are closing TV and RADIO and also they are closing NEWS websites like CNN or BBC. We are blacked out ! If you have info please post it here thanks She got a job on ruters as a translater just now. I will be updating you people here if i get any new info.
You might try going through proxy servers to get to the news sites. I'm sure a lot of members here run some.
none of my friends in Bangkok know whats going on. ALready rumors of shooting and fighting happening, plus runs on ATMs but those rumors always start.. It will take a few hours to get the real story. The PM is on his way back from NY, that is true. I'm going to pop open a beer and lay low.
Now someone speks in Thai in TV please listen and translate if you can They closed TV for CNN and BBC but internet is up i see now. The thai new is down all of it. They blocked it they have a system for block any website they want. I will check proxy Now some one belong to the coup is telling in TV to be calm and they do not want to get power they just want to finish the PM beucase he is bad for Thailand.
Yahoo News has an AP article that basically gives an overview of the overall political sitiuation of the past year and some background information on the Thai king. It says some nice things about the king and how popular he is. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060919/ap_on_re_as/thailand
Maybe you should. I heard you guys were moving to a rather better economy...I wonder what sort of things this will do to your country....... It doesn't seem to be higly violent, yet, but keep your eyes and ears open.
According to Bloomberg http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aVAsoMrOuu8w&refer=home They also said that the prime minister has fired the army chief (like that does much good in a coup ).
Calm down, nothing serious yet. I'm at the moment in Bkk Heavy rain though - they all get wet and then go home Thaksin can stay in the USA and clear his case he has with some American business men. 2 billion $$$ worth.
The problem coming is the PM wants fight back. If he wants to get home and make a fight for it then we have a civil war in Bangkok. So yes right now its calm but it will be fight if the PM do not step down and back off.
