Hello I have read lots and lots in this forum and now I would like to post a question which is confusing me for a few days. I would like to know can you get traffic and can you reach top position for a highly competitive keyword for example "Travel" . I am not trying to question any one just want to know is it organically possible with the tips of link building given here. The reason I ask this is becz you have almost half of the google first page filled with results from youtube and wikipedia and some other. Any positive and detailed input will be appreciated as I really wanna know the answer here from the experts.
Well for a start I would say don't give up. If you have a quality website, and you have a lot of time, then you can work your way into the top few pages of Google. Why don't you try to make a "travel" video? If you can't come up with content you can actually buy video content and then stitch it together yourself. What don't you conduct a survey, and then link to the survey through wikipedia? You might have the link removed, but if you can show it is relevant, accurate and important etc why not give it a go. Ask a local uni for help and get them to participate to make it a little more legitimate. You will need to do some intense link building, so be prepared to have to work long and hard creating content, making connections and building up a following. There are other ways too, but basically if you have read through this forum, and others, there is not quick and easy way to get to the front page. It is like AC/DC said - "Its a long way to the top if you want to be on the front page of Google." or something.
Exactly, to get ranked your website on first page of Google for a keyword like travel is difficult task but no impossible. But Your continuous efforts can lead your website to front page of Google.
everything is possible in SEO field if you are doing good, patience is big factor in SEO, you know. when you are going to target a competitive keyword then try to get first keyword based domain or suggest client about this factor then start organic seo for your targeted keyword
Thanks a lot for the valuable input. My question is how do you beat wiki and the images that come. I tried to find answers about it in some of the forums even this before posting and what I found is that its quite a task to override wiki page and get to top position. And some even went to the extent that it is not possible via organic methods. Now my question is this true?
make a huge backlink with anchor "travel" to your site, huge backlink from high PR site, but it will takes time
Where I am the top result for 'travel' is expedia. Yahoo site explorer says it has over 4 million backlinks. Plus of course, it's an established site, old domain registration etc etc. So the truth is, by the time you've got 4 million backlinks - it will have 12 million. So no, in theory possible - in reality - not a cat's chance in hell of beating it. Other spots on the front page aren't so entirely impenetrable - the second spot has just 25 thousand backlinks, and where I am the wikipedia Travel page is in the third spot with a measly 10 thousand. So, if you've got a killer site, advertise it hugely across all media, and throw huge amounts of money at 'viral' content - then getting the 20 thousand backlinks is possible. But it costs. It's the sort of thing you do with a platoon of top agencies -media buyers, app builders, PR agencies - not on your own in your back bedroom.
Totally agree. A new travel company that advertises on TV etc. has a lot of exposure and gets people talking about them and linking to them could do it, one man sat at his computer posting on forums and commenting on blogs would struggle to say the least.
Well "Travel" is just a example I quoted as a keyword. There are 100 of competitive keywords like these for example another one would be drug. What I wanted to know is, Is it really possible in all essence with a organic SEO to displace the wiki at the top. If not if you are at the 2nd or 3rd position right after wiki does that helps bring your traffic. Lets say Travel is being searched 20,000 times a day. Now wiki is at the top and maybe a site xyz.com or whatever is at the 2nd spot just after wiki. What kind of traffic the site can expect? I don't own a site now I am just preparing a case study becz I have read and read and really wanna know from all the SEO gurus out here is it really worthwhile to make a site in a very competitive niche, even try to get it right after wiki, how much a impact will the site have?

Ah, well, if you want to know what traffic is estimated for serps positions, then here's the most recent research on it - http://chitika.com/research/2010/the-value-of-google-result-positioning/ - so for positions 4 and 5 - between 6 and 8%. But bear in mind that for those high volume traffic keywords, the sites in those positions are still likely to have 10thousand + backlinks. For all the work and expense it entails, you still better putting your effort and money into a less-searched for long-tail.
Every thing is possible in seo but one phrase keyword is take a time to ranking but other keyword come fast in ranking if you good optimize your site.
