I think Ethics is a funny word to put with SEO. You can only get better rankings when other people get lower rankings. So, the ethics involved would be how you justify that you are more deserving of the better rankings than other websites. Maybe, the other sites in your niche are big corporates - who don't care about their customers. In that case it could be seen as ethical for a more customer service focused website to have better rankings. But, if you find yourself in a niche where every ranked website is buying links, scraping content, spamming forums, etc. and you start thinking 'if you can't beat them - join them'... then you're probably compromising your ethics. So, I'd say... if you're offering a better / cheaper / easier service - it's ethical that you should move up the rankings. If, however you set out to do what it takes to out rank others at the expense of offering a better / cheaper / easier service - it's un-ethical that you should move up the rankings.
