Making sure you have all the correct data in there is also a good idea. It helps to have it as the same format that my be on directories that you submitted to or even your actual site.

IE if in directories you submit your address as 12 Brambury Road. In your listing put it as 12 Brambury Road not 12 Brambury Rd etc etc.

Not only trying to get links from local businesses but also try local directories and sites. There are often one or two sites that list a certain type of company in your area. Just have a look around :)

Google Maps usually ranks the business in the closest big city first. Try adding some images and reviews.

There are about 50 factors that go into boosting your ranking in Google local - now called Google Places.

    Some have been mentioned above.

Be sure you aren't breaking any guidelines as you can get penalized and ranked down
Be sure your Place Page is complete with all info, proper categories, good description, lots of images
Get lots of listings on local directories and yellow page sites and local directories
Be sure you don't have any duplicate or rogue listings

Those are a few good tips.

I assume you have provided crisp details about your company and that's may be the reason behind your high ranking in Google local search.

"crisp" details? Details only count for a small part of the ranking, there are many other factors.

I think he's saying he DOESN'T rank high and wants to know how.

The first step is to create a Google Map account for your business or website.
Search "google local map", etc. for more details.

Well there are alot of factors that help you rank 1st for google maps/local>www.google.com/local/add

Being centric to the city helps but isn't the most important factor.
You need trusted site reviews, decent pagerank and being reasonably close to the city center (within 10mi). Other local directory listings also factor in they've specifically stated that businesses should be listed under their actual names, not city name+ legal business name.
They will penalize you if you change this..and also dont have multiple listings under your same business name..

    Hi,

Geo-Marketing (Geo-Listings, Mobile Marketing, Geo-Social Marketing, Local SEO) has a variety of data points that decide if a listing shows up at the top or not at all. The algorithms for this area are definitely different from what we have all known for the past 20 years for general websites. Here is a list of items for consideration:

    1. Distance of origin search to destination. The location closest to the searcher will be at top. Nothing you can do about this.

If Distance is not an issue, then you run into the following items:

    2. Is your listing claimed?

    3. Is your listing up to date with all of your business information?

    4. Do you have positive consumer reviews?

    5. Does your listing have citations out on the Internet? (no this is not about links)

This is only a small list of items to consider, but more importantly keep in mind that Google is not the 800lb gorilla when it comes to geo-marketing....at least not yet. There are over 100 website (in 4 categories, not including the old business directories) in this space and consumers are using places like Yelp, Judy's Book, Merchant Circle, Local.com, Citysearch, and many others. Your Geo-Marketing strategy is not about being at one location, but making sure your local business listings are up to date and multiple geo-listing websites.

Keep in mind that consumers are the one's driving what websites they will use not only to find a business product or service, but to post their reviews as well.

Lastly, mobile app developers are also the other source that decide what database they will use for the apps. If they decide to use Citysearch and all you have done is focused your attention on Google, then your business will lose out.

Another reason why a single source is not such a good idea.

Hope this is helpful as you look at Geo-Marketing strategy over the next 3 years.

As of now, it is a little difficult if your location is not centric, but I believe this will change soon as Google heads to control every square meter of the planet. If there is a market, Google will be there.

Make sure you fill in all the info, get good reviews and then populate your website with keywords specific for your location.
