Yeah I just read up on this recently, and that's what I found too - Yahoo will crawl nofollows and discover pages that are nofollowed, but will not pass link juice to those pages.

Yahoo does count every type of link including nofollow ones. They do not know "nofollow" attribute, sometimes they also count link from Spam post or javascript link toward each website as well.

Nofollow backlinks will be counted in all search engines, but they dont mind it for ranking you higher :)

Google,Yahoo and Bing don't count nofollow links. So its better that you try to have backlinks from dofollow pages.

Now that's what I believe based on a bunch of stuff I've read and seen.

But why, then, do nofollow links show up in Google Webmaster Tools? Is that totally separate from the googlebots that crawl for serp purposes?

Google crawls whatever it can find, that is why links with nofollow show up in webmaster tools. Whether it "counts" a nofollow link, or passes juice is an open question. I rather think that is does, even though G claims that nofollow links do not pass PR. Just my experience. Yahoo does count nofollow links.

Thanks Dillon. Do you think G will use nofollow links for discovering content and adding to the search index (even though no link juice is passed -- meaning the discovered page might only rank for super long tail, totally unique queries). Hmm..this would be a fairly simple experiment to do if someone had the time and interest.
