Tip Top Directory - PR3 and Mature, 53k+ Links - Monetization Ideas?

Do any of you have any ideas that would assist me in making more of a profit off of Tip Top Directory? It gets over 7,000 hits per day, has a PR of 3, and an alexa rank of around 53,000...

I at this point am running out of ideas for monetization that would actually work, and I would appreciate some of you other directory owners to pass on some advice if you would.

I'm tired of maintaining it at this point, as I'm only selling $0-50 or so worth of links per month.

This is what happens with a directory loaded with unlimited no.of links. You keep getting xx,xxxx submissions go on approving or loading a database with 50,000 links and then some promotion.

So you are happy to see a supercool alexa and some green bar.

Why will someone want to invest in a directory with adsense, kontera, free links, poor template/design, common category database, unlimited links per category, poor editorial standard and lastly even after makingup one's mind to make a submission get listed in page no.55 of a category wherein the search engine 'may' index it.

    Its high time you go back to directory basic like;

    Editorial Standard
    Quality Links
    Proper Designs
    Unique database structure and more...

Its the need of the hour to improve the indexing of your portal, its submissions and for better monetization.

    Here's a few ideas...

When's the last time you audited a category or created a third level category?

Are you seeing any Google traffic from non-submitters, i.e. people looking for sites like you list?

Is Kontera making you any money? If not substantial I'd get rid of it.

I'd switch the stats box and the Google ad box placement.

    You have a couple options,

First would be to dig through some of the older posts here or in other forums to actually learn how to run a directory - be very selective in who you listen to.... Second would be to sell or give the directory to someone who knows what to do with it.

    Thanks guys...

I've also been toying with the idea of installing the bidding link directory script and giving a really cheap placement to the premium linkholders that are currently there. After that, I'd use aweber to send an email to the rest of the users telling them of the change.

From there I'd drop the old database and use my phpld license on a new domain with better strategy.

What you mind dropping old database ? Are you trying to cancel all of people that already submit to your directory ? and for both your premium member that already purchase from your directory ... Those people will cry ...

No, not really. They'd still be getting the links they paid for, and the free members can resubmit. I want a clean directory but there's no real way to clean the one I have enough right now.

Further, I only have real obligation to those who have paid. If I either gave them placement in the new bidding directory or in a newly placed directory on an alternative domain, they're still getting their link.

This is all similar to what would likeley happen if I were to sell the directory to another individual.

As a potential customer here's what I'm hearing from you....I let my directory get away from me. I couldn't be bothered to take the time to audit the existing listings or even just clean out the unrelated ones. After all, why should I be expected to, it's not like I owe the site owners anything - unless of course they did pay extra for a featured listing. I'm going to delete anyone who took the time to submit and help build my directory and will expect them to resubmit if they want back in. Oh, and I'm going to change it to a bidding directory because I haven't figured out any other way to make money off of all the suckers that submitted to my site.

Yeah, I know, not your exact words. But, it's certainly the vibe I'm getting.

Yes, indeed, that's a directory that I want to support even if only through taking the time to submit.

Running a quality directory where people are willing to pay for additional advertising is a labor intensive enterprise. It doesn't sound like you have the time or the desire to do it well. Perhaps you would be better off selling the site and finding a different strategy for earning money on the web.

hey, 7000 hits per day will earn you exactly $$$$. Does it not make you any money with CPM? I think CPM will earn you better profit if you could do it.

I will assume that your amount of unique visits not even near 700 per day based on Alexa's metrics.
7,000 hits is nothing because hits never measure unique visitors but nearly your site pages content.
5 pics on page counts as 5 hits

You mean like key to Golden Gate of Bank safe combination?

You're all just baiting me to either try and get me to give my directory to you (no way in hell), or to sell it (only if the price is really sweet for me, which probably won't happen), or most likely trying to start a flamewar and/or get me banned. I won't have that.

Anyway, cleaning out over 50k links isn't a single person job, firstly. Second of all, I make sites to make money, not to be a nice guy and wipe people's butts for them. Free things always have a catch. In the case of a directory, the admin can deny your link, remove it later, or whatever. There should be no expectation of service beyond consideration for inclusion if a free submission is made. Paying customers either get accepted and will live in my directory forever, and I will gladly edit their listings at any time, or denied, and I refund them the money because I'm not providing them a service.

Baiting you to give me a site with over 50,000 unaudited links? Don't think so. Trying to get you banned? Nope, was actually trying to help you.

You asked for advice. It was given freely. You didn't like it. So be it.
