Well i think that removing the signature - temporarily or permanently along with the a couple of infractions should do the trick to check the no. of posts people do just to increase the no. of posts.

Obviously no one is reading this thread, or at least not listening to it... "submitted mine" posts are still popping up like wildfire

I know this thread isn't going to stop it...I didn't post it for that reason.

The reason I posted it was people are complaining that they got infractions but were never told it was wrong to do. Now when they complain this thread can be linked to and the complaint thread closed.

Again, as Ahkip said if people are still doing it, report the thread. Most Mods pretty much ignore this section (or at least try to) and rely on reported threads to give infractions.

I certainly plan to abide by this new rule, but I saw these 'me too' type posts as a tool and barometer. If I saw a thread with many 'I submitted mine...' but no response from the OP, I didn't submit as I felt the directory owner...

    1. Was in effect spamming and not offering a service. (Throw up the announcement and never check it to see if there were any problems or questions.)
    2. Was perhaps throwing a directory together, getting a few links, and planning to sell it within a week or two.
    3. Was gathering emails and had no intention of maintaining the site.

Also if the thread had a great deal of activity I tended to go look the site over. Conversely, if the thread was over 10 hours old and had only 1 or 2 posts, I tended to skip it; the exception being niche sites.

The 'me too' posts helped to save me time and better allocate my efforts.

    Just offering another perspective.

Actually, I wasn't replying at the "me too" posts (at least not all) when I announced my directory because then you have a long thread going
    -Added mine
    -Approved, thank you
    -Added mine, thank you
    -Approved, you are welcome
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .etc

Obviously I didn't abandon my directory (sig link), bumping the thread doesn't mean that you care more about your directory. I would argue that it means that you want to get many listings as fast as possible in order to sell it later on.

Oh, I maybe didn't state that well. I was thinking along the lines of once a day or every 12 hours or so, or the ones where someone mentions having a problem.

I agree a see-saw thread would quickly become meaningless and quite tedious.

And, I had no one in mind when I wrote that.

There's a big difference between a natural thank you and a cut and paste post padding job. I like thanking some of the directory owners in their threads. Nothing is wrong with that.

As with most rules, it doesn't take long for folks to figure a way to get around them. Clever the new announcements that require a request for a PM to get the address of the website being advertised.

Do you mean BST? Surely people aren't announcing a directory without providing the url?

I saw at least one anouncement where the directory owner didn't give the URL.
    However my favorite now is

Yeah, I saw that one. Two days of free inclusions. No URL was provided, and asking people to pm him or leave "send me pm" on thread.

Well, no use bitchin. I reported it and its really up to the Mods/Shawn. Personally I think its a bit riduculous to post in the announcement section but not give the url but its not my call.

    Hi yfs1.

Another issue that a worthy person such as yourself could address in a sticky is the protocol for selling links from directories.

Is it okay to post a link sale from a directory in the link sales forum?

Or should directory link sales go into Solicitations & Announcements?

Personally i think both of them means the same to me :)
So if i had to sell any links in dirs. then i would more preferably sell it in Link Sales, then opt for Solicitations & Announcements.

I guess I tend to think of Solicitation & Announcements as where people list their NEW directories or to offer limited-time specials. Personally, I think it should be limited to free/recip links.

Link Sales is where I would look for places to buy links regardless of site type.
