From what I understand, the age of the domain name does not matter. It is just that if the domain name has been used before and is old, there are chances that they are listed on several search engines and thus have a higher PR otherwise it will start from PR 0.

Definitely. Google gives weight on site that is registered longer years. The logic of this is if you register your domain for a longer years it just means you're serious with your site. Are you talking about SERP or PR here?

An old site with lots of good content and good internal and external link structure is almost impossible to compete with in the SERPS right now.

It's not just the gae of the domain to consider though, but also the age of the incoming links to it.

    Age matters.

Two sites with exact same content, the older would win. That's it.

of course age matters. simply because of the fact that the site got more and older (stronger) backlinks then a new site.

after a few years there might also be a bonus

yeah age of the site will matter if site is online from long time and have unique content on site and have lots of incoming link to site.

yes it does matter simply because it had already been indexed (suppose the name have already been used) plus many other webmasters and other surfers are already familiar to the site...

Matt summed it up well, an old domain that hasn't been used doesn't hold the value, its an old domain that has/had a site with old backlinks.

Considering that age is such a great thing, help me out with this, guys.

I recently acquired a 5 year old blog that attained a PR7 before being abandoned in 2003. The old contect stayed, and it retained its page rank all that time.

Now, since I acquired it a couple of weeks ago and began posting again it isn't being spidered the way I would expect of a PR7. Googlebot last visited on the 9th of the month, and the newest content indexed by Google is from the 12th - almost a week ago.

So, does Google simply stop spidering a site when it has been abandoned for a certain length of time, even if it has high PR? I've sent new links to the site from several of my PR5 sites and submitted a sitemap to Googlem, but nothing seems to help. Any advice?

Did you change the Whois data when you got hold of the domain?

I can't - it's a Blogspot blog so the whois data just comes up with Google information.

Yeah, that's annoying. I'm hoping it settles back to a PR7 after the next update, as I intend to sell links there as soon as I can. Since the site cost me less than $100, though, I'll still be winning even if it becomes a PR6.

Even if it does become a PR6 it should still be spidered more often than my PR5 blogs, though - or at least, that's what I've been led to believe.
