Nice eyes and a great smile, if shes got that then we can work on the rest, no really, lol As a submitter or a person browsing a directory?
Things I'd suggest looking for (which are also things we strive to do). Keep it clean. Devoid of dead links and expired out sites and landing pages. Well indexed. Simple, not cluttered with too much advertising, or other distractions. An actual contact page with phone number, email, etc... Age. Directories that are years old, vs. months or weeks.
Will I eventually get a google counted backlink from it? Is the site SPaM free? Does the site use annoying features like popups, popunders and tonnes of ads? Does the directory require a reciprocal link or not? Are there sufficient categories to fit 99% of sites into perfectly?
First, it can't be a paid directory. The second I see that, I am gone. Along the same lines, I would prefer if it is human edited and does not require a reciprocal link. The directory also needs to be clean, no adult content, no gambling. As well, I prefer specific categories. It makes no sense, for example, if you're a marketing company, to have to submit to a general "business" category or something similar.
Most directories that are free (I said most and not all) have no revenue to pay quality editors or to pay for features and the promotion that would benefit you as the submitter. As an example, business.com pays for PPC traffic into its categories. How many free directories do this?
The directory needs to make money in order to stay open for you, so if it doesn't charge for a review then its going to do something like the following. Have adsense and send you occasional emails asking you to click the ads, yep some actually do that, risky and stupid. Sell your email address so that someone else can spam you. Auto approve, never edit, FFA And ultimately get bored with the directory if it makes no money and stop running it, in which case your listings in free directories become very short term and never reach the age where they are trusted by the search engines.
I understand that directories need to make money. That is one reason why directories typically aren't the best spot to look for and acquire backlinks. Paying for Do-Follow backlinks is directly against Google's TOS.
You are ill informed regarding the differences regarding paid directories and paid links. Watch the video here and see what Matt Cutts says about paid directories.
Fair enough. Good tip. We still, as a rule, don't use paid directories, or directories in general (with the exception of DMOZ), but I appreaciate the video and clarification.
Many of the free directories simply hit the approve button and any submission is accepted. Most of the respected paid directories truly edit submissions. In my case, I write a unique description for each listing that appears in the category and a separate description for the listing detail page. It's twice the work, but it is my hope that both submitters and visitors see the value in doing it this way. As with any SEO effort, directories alone won't do much. But for clients, permanent listings in respected directories can offer them long term value in the years ahead. No problem on the video CIKMarketing. We are all here to share and learn. Well some are here for other reasons, but I think we both are contributing to the forum.
