The usual defending words when Israel commits terrorists attack is that they were defending themselves and they have a right to defend themselves against anyone. The comment about Japan and Germany was in response to the fact that one of the items Duke is railing about happened a handful of years after WW2. The biggie, the attack on the ship, happened in the early 1960s. It's a little late to start a fight about something that happened then. And yes, it does matter that Duke was the head of the KKK. You arent just agreeing with the facts of the matter, you're agreeing with his conclusions. Duke is a notorious racist and just isnt playing with a full deck.

Going after an ally for misconduct 50 or 60 years ago is like getting upset at Ford for building the Edsel. Not good policy. That said I'm sure our government spies on them and vice versa, because in this day pretty much every government does (including allies). Why? Because countries act in their own interest before that of their allies. For example, the planes that were shooting at our guys patrolling the UN sanctioned "no-fly zone" from approximately the end of the Gulf War to the invasion of Iraq were being kept aloft by parts originating from France, one of our allies. Allies are a good thing, but you just cant trust any of them fully. That was by no means the only such example, just one that comes to mind. The oil-for-food barter Saddam set up to get around UN sanctions was largely assisted by people we consider allies. I'd love it if every ally was 100% trustworthy, but it isnt a reality. I can think of some actions of our own government that dont pass the smell test too. When Vietnam became politically untenable for our pols in DC... they left a lot of allies there to their fate. A lot of them were killed. No country has a spotless record, and that isnt to belittle the heinous nature of something like the Liberty affair, but we just dont set policy based on actions half-century ago.
