.org vs .com

    How great is the advantage of .com over .org? Does google favor .com over .org (assuming both are equal in CEO). I have a nice domain name in mind, however the .com is taken. Also most variations of it are taken. However, the .org is free.

    I would like this site to grow into a major contender in the niche, however don't know if it is possible with a .org name.

    Also, assess .net reletive to .org and .com. thanks.

    As far as search engines are concerned, it doesn't matter what domain name extensions you have, it is all the same to it. Actually what is important is really the content and linkbacks.

    However if you are looking for type-in traffic then more people will remember the .com better than a .org

    so if my site is about books, it will matter, but if my site is about astronomy it won't?

    If it is a book club website then an org might make sense.

    There's no difference in terms of SEO, .com is more brandable and may recieve more type-in traffic.

    i think .net started out as popular with ISPs and other "net" related businesses. Similarly .org was for charities and non-profits and similar organizations. Times have changed however, and the tlds are used by all. I think you'll find that there are actually more .org sites than .net but the .net still commands higher prices.

    Agreed. People aren't accustomed to going to yourdomain.org

    Business -> .com
    Organization -> .org

    It's kind of confusing if they're switched.

    Actually, I've noticed .com domains with search keywords right in them tend to rank #1 with a handful of links. I agree with national-parks though, if your website is about an organization go with .org, else .com

    I'd prefer .org to .net if .com is gone. Seriously, there's not much type-in traffic anywhere...if people like your site, they bookmark it.

    The domain extension doesn't matter in the search engines. If your site is of an organization go for .org, if your site is a business site then definitely .com is the best, if .com is already taken go for .net.

    If i can get it always go .com, if not .net is my next choice. I think .com is the easyiest to remeber for type in's

    The bit about the PR for .com being higher, is probably true. Unique-ness and other stuff is more important.

    I cant even seem to get above PR0 on flash.vg.

    Any proof on this b/c i don't think it's true...

    .com is your best bet, but just get both... domains are only 8$ a year :)

    I agree. I now make it a habit to pick a .org should the .com be not available. They seem to do pretty well so far in Google and Microsoft search engines.
