I'm trying to choose keywords. What's the ideal amount of daily searches you want for keywords?

I thought 'reptile forum' would have a lot, but apparently it's only 18 searches per day. How many searches would be good for a keyword?

The first think you should look in to is selecting a keyword that advertisers willing to pay the most for it. You can find this at spyfu.com. You can have e keyword that has 5000 searchers make more money than e keyword with 50000 searches. It all depends on the niche.

As many as possible. But the more searches there are, the more results you'll have to compete with, so choose a keyword with approx 75,000 monthly searches as your main keyword, then select less common keywords (20,000 /month or less [but over 1000]) as secondary keywords. Then you'll be able to compete more easily.

    Yeah, agree.

Especially using long-tail versions of your main keyword that could rank easily, and so give you some additional traffic.

There is absolutely no answer to that question, what you need to look into is the quality of that traffic.

Think about it from this perspective. Out of those people who find your site by searching for "reptile forum", how many of them are going to take a commercial action on your site?

If the keyword is a great phrase, mate, you can earn 2 visits a month, and if you convert at least half of them, then its omney in the bank. If you rank for a not so good keyword, well... just a waste of time really...

Well for me it depends on the keyword traffic and it's competition that's why when selecting keywords I compute for KEI of keyword effectiveness index to know how effective is the keyword to target.

Why not just "reptiles" or "reptile information" "reptiles as pets" etc. Because people usually look at or join forums looking for information and other people with common interests; people will know your site is a forum if it is a forum, when they click into it.

Well, the ideal volumes of traffics per day varies depends on the competitiveness of the keywords your website have. In your case (with keyword "reptile forum") daily traffic of 18 is not so bad. (since your keyword is not so popular at all)

well, i think we need to think about the keyword competition and result in major search engine. it would be more beneficial if you choose a keyword which good amount of searches and less amount of result and that will help you to get better rank

    It is subjective.
Varies from keyword to keyword and niche to niche.
    There is no ideal number.
But it is recommended that you choose a keyword just below the most competitive one and NOT the most competitive one.
