Mispelt Domain Names?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by Skinny, Sep 8, 2006.

Is there any coin to be made from buying a mispelling of a popular word or phrase and putting advertisments on it?

I have nothing in mind ATM. Like are there legal ramifications for using the mispelling of a celebrity (trademarks are obviously out of the question, or are they?).

I'm just keen as to how you go about this successfully.

Well, it really depends I guess. Stay out of those trademarks or anything which would be in the radar of the big corporations or celebrities because it could be lawsuits waiting to happen.

If mispelt words like 'receive' spelt as 'recieve' , you probably can get by but then again, it might really be considered done in bad faith even though they are not illegal in nature.

Check with your lawyers about it. If you think you may be working at the edge, I would think it is best not to even consider doing it.

Those domains are called typo's and I own approx 1800+ of them.
They are pretty good for getting some extra traffic but:

    - make sure there is no TM aspects
    - the best typo's are mostly .com's
    - its always a risk buying a typo domain ( you never know what the traffic will be like )

1800! Wow, thats a pretty good amount. Do you use them to drive traffic to your site, or are they all pointed to some sort of portal page with ads on them?

I'm surprised they'd be worthwhile, because renewing 1800 domains every year is a pretty hefty bill.

    I own 2500+ domain names.. (mostly .com's)
They are all parked at parking programs like: Fabulous, SedoPro etc...

( some make good money and I renew them for 2 years,
the domain names that dont make any money or income below $6.75
    I don't renew)

for all typo name, traffic = value..

if there is no type in traffic, there is no value in the name

you can always use overture to see if a typo is popular

Well look at this article. A typo domian going for quarter million.

    money.cnn.com/2006/08/29/technology/nextbigforeign.biz2/

I would say, thats a pretty penney for a typo domain. good luck

A typo can have value when there is traffic but, its hard te sell.
( but it is possible )

And in my professional experience I would advice to not always
use overtune for typo's ( or domains in general )

yea, overture 's number is not equal to the traffic you will get, but you can get a ballpark value on how popular that typo is..

I think mispelt domains are not good, although there is possible traffic potential, these kind of domains don't produce very good branding... and the chance of return visitors is very limited. Most spelling mistakes are accidential, repeats are rare.

    Dear Eukhost,

typo domains are a real gamble.. (but, you could increase you chanse
    with good research and experience)

Typo's are not generally used for branding a website but, for domain PPC
    Parking Programs.

Tho, the income can be very stable.
    I make approx $x.xxx,- (mid-high) a month just with the typo's
So, if you handle the market correctly it can be profitable

Some domains that i have made is a year: $ 0,-
Some other domains make in a month: $600,- (very easy)

and thats the spirit but, dont invest to much in one go...
    Work with step investments

Now they are all in sedo. Some used to be in Goldkey but I didn't like how they count the clicks.
