I want to create a text only website in notepad, not html. No active links, no images and to upload as a .txt extention. Just like robots.text, but a website.

What navigation will I need and how can I get it to rank with no inbound or outbound links and no clickable menu? Thanks for any assistance.

you won't be able to have any navigation. 'cause notepad and .txt don't support anything but "text only" (no links/images/fonts/anything but text).

    DaVe,

I want to create a website, let's say, www.wtf-man.txt, wthf-man-2.txt etc. A run of the mill, usual size, website but in .txt only with no hypertext or links. How can I rank in google, yahoo and msn. And to create navigation for the site since in notepad I can't create active links.

I've seen flash sites etc, why not a pure text site with good value content. Some people don't like images. The best selling books contain no pictures and no jazzy stuff. Pure reading. Nothing else.

dude, you won't have any navigation within a txt file. none.

unless you write "to see the next page past this http://sdgsdg.com/whatever.txt" into your address bar"

Even flashsites are technically "inside" (encapsulated) in HTML pages, unless the link is directly pointing to a .swf file, which you'll almost never find a ranking SE link to.

In notepad, create a file, put in
    <html><body>your text</body></html>
    Code (markup):
and save it as index.html or whatever you want to call it. That's a barebones text site...no title even.

SEOpirate, I'm happy with size 12 fonts, plain text, no jaxxy stuff like <b> or <i> or anything. Just pure default text. I need to find out if I can rank it etc like html pages and to find a way for the user to navigate.

Cut and paste of a link may do, but a bit laborious and users might not read the help suggestions to navigate in that manner.

MrX, Thank's but I don't want to use html. I want to move away from the rank-n-file run of the mill stuff like html etc. Pure text. Good reading. Away from jazzy fonts etc. No images and no live links. A traditional way of reading.

Better yet, why not just install wordpress and rework the basic theme? Minimal css would be used to create a WordPad effect. Sounds like a win-win to me. You get a well supported CMS, a theme that could be coded with in minutes, navigation will be possible, you could use nothing but text if you wish, and it would still look like a .txt file.

That's what I want. How can I go about it to rank in google with no possibility of an active menu, inbound links or outbound links and a new site that is destined to end up in the sandbox. I'm a traditionalist caught up in the world of computers, images and fancy text. Plain reading is what I want to achieve. Just like a boring looking book with no images, plain text based website.

To get indexed, use the Submit Site feature in Google. Once you're indexed, someone would have to specifically search for words/phrases in your document that aren't available from other sites...based on your criteria of no backlinks, etc.

Tekntoant, many thanks for the tip. I am considering that possibilty.

Is it possible to configure a server to present .txt files by default on a domain if htm, html, php etc do not exist. If so, it would be the first positive step forward. Let's say google went to the domain, I think it will ask for the index, since and if I do index.txt it should be served. Yes? No?

There are many British site offering the ability to switch to text only versions for those who do not like images and other stuff, but keeping hyperlinkded menus.

From my point of view the only way to rank with 100% text only website is creating a sort of sitemap with no other content that meta keywords, meta description and the hyperlinked list containing each of the single text files.

In your .htaccess file, put in

    DirectoryIndex xyz.txt
    Code (markup):
where xyz.txt is the name of your text file.

Would sitemaps help. Since it is a txt file, I will use sitemaps to get crawled.

BasedSolutions, yes, I noted sitemaps are pure txt that google follows. This does indeed look like a positive method to get the pages crawled and indexed. Thanks'.

And since my notepad style will have no active links, is it possible that google will crawl from page to page. There is no difference in the documents between sitemaps and txt page.

Now that is brilliant webmastering. Brilliant.

OK, my theory is also that a 3, 4 or even a remote possiblity of a 5 pagerank is possible for this text based site I am going to do. Since readable links will exist to copy and paste to navigate. Robots should follow these links. Just like a sitemaps txt file.

I still don't think it would be the best idea.... eg www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt

as soon as that loaded up, i did not want to read it becuase of the way it's presented, no differences between headings, and body text etc, it just looks like a pile of text (which it is)

Plus the only way to navigate through these text pages of your text site (without using HTML at all) would be for the users to copy and paste, which is not practical at all
