How to find out where a site gets its traffic?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by Helmet, May 27, 2010.

Is there a site that offers accurate information about where sites get their traffic from? I'm wondering if one of my competitors is using a particular ad network or other advertising method to gain their traffic, or if all of it is coming from Google.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I do believe the tool you are looking for is SEOQuake you can download the toolbar here ...http://www.seoquake.com

It tells you everything you need to know about your competition and i recommend checking out youtube for some video tutorials on how to use it.

It gets my 5* for noobie friendly!

I agree, SEO Quake is what you need. There are a couple of threads here about how to use it, although it's very straightforward.

Compete.com = problem solved. Neither market samurai nor seoquake shows traffic sources... only SEO related data (backlinks, pagerank, etc.). Not sure what the other guys are talking about but...

Compete isn't always reliable. I've used it on my own sites and haven't found any correlations between Compete's data and Google Analytics in some cases.

Hi folks, thanks for your recommendations.

Though it is similar to toolbars provided by SEOMoz and SEO Book, I really like SEO Quake's keyword analysis capabilities which just allowed me to make major improvements to my SEO.

I still don't really get the information I need from that tool, unless I'm not using it properly. It has a lot of features, so maybe someone can point out how I can find the info I need?

I have a competitor who gets around 20 times more traffic than I do. I suspect it's not all from Google. If they have a secret ad network they use for advertising, how would I find out which one it is? I understand SEO Quake can show back links, but widely distributed links on an ad network wouldn't figure highly on a Google or Yahoo backlink check.

Any suggestions for this kind of sleuthing?

Hey john have you had any successes with using Compete?

And at the original poster: as far as finding out what ad network they are using, next to impossible unless you email em I guess and an interview.

Yeah, Compete has been great for me. I also use Alexa for the click stream data.

Alexa datas are only reliable when the website includes an alexa widget, I have tested on my own websites.

I've found Alexa to be inaccurate with my own site, so it probably is with other sites too.

some web's analytics? If you mean google analytics or similar, no, that's not a way to get traffic info for someone else's site

I tend to use keywordspy.com ... it will tell you what ad campaigns competitors are running (you can use the bar at the top) along with a bunch of other useful information. Use it all the time to find keyword ideas and different tactics.
