How many would agree that SEO can become a pipedream? Let's say for an average service. In an area like Portland, where I'm at, when maybe 8, 9 or 10 companies of a trade had websites, it seemed a lot easier to move one's site higher up page one, or onto page one. But when 100 similar companies eventually get websites, many magaged by professional SEO and web designers, I find it almost like a casino atmosphere. Roll the dice or spin the wheel. Who's going to be number 1, 2 or 3? Good keywords and tags always make sense. But I think that the promotional logic surrounding SEO these days don't fit the direction of the future. In my niche, there were like 10 companies with websites like 10 years ago. Now there have to be 100 of them. In 10 more years, if not just 5 years, I suspect 500 or more will have websites. And it looks like a greater percentage every year, are hiring professionals to tweak their sites. I'm more or less talking about big metro areas, with services or retailers geared toward marketing locally within 50 miles, or within the state. As each year passes, it seems to make less sense to design a website for SERPs, and more sense to design for functionality and individuality. One way to override saturation may be buying an old domain name. And I think that having a unique content can draw searchers looking for that unique content. So the content would have to be something not found on other sites within the niche.

Hey mate, functionality and individuality has to come first anyhow. Here is the thing though: your reference to a gambling atmosphere doesn't make much sense. SEO, in the end, is a numbers game. Its all about backlinks, internal optimization, functionality and then some. A website, for example, which has been internally SEOed and provides quality content will always do better than a poorly designed, sub-standard quality website with a lot of links pointing back at it. Another example: take two similarly structured websites, with identical internal SEO optimization but a varying backlink count. Say website a has 100 backlinks and website b has 1k. Website b will always outrank website a. However, if website a decides to optimize their resource, providing quality content and website b stays stagnant in its internal development while continuing the backlink building process, then website b will have to accelerate said process to keep up with an optimized, quality website. Simply speaking, website b will have to build (only an estimation here) around 100 backlinks for every new "website a link". See, it's a numbers game.
Hard work, some time and constant ingenuity will get you there. Consider long tail searches. Write more blogs and articles with better content and keep updating your site. There are plenty of small websites outranking the big ones for many highly trafficked keywords. Reason - you want it more than the salaried SEO workers.
