That depends on your online business and what it relates to: Adsense, Clickbank, CPA, big ticket items, etc. What is best for one probably won't be best for the others. For example, Craigslist and Yahoo Answers are effective free methods for driving a decent volume of free traffic to Adsense sites, but using these sites to promote your $997 launch is probably going to be futile.

If you are a news site 1. Get into google news. 2. Find sites that are related, but not in direct competition of your site, and let them know whenever you have a story they might be interested in. Wouldn't you love a news tip? They do too. Easy free linkback. 3. Regularly post relevant polls in content. You never know what site might want to link to you just because you have a poll (it's also a good excuse to direct someone to the content). 4. Social network all of your content. Primarily Stumble, Digg, Reditt and Twitter. It begins as junk traffic but if any of them blow, you're gold. 5. Always have the latest stories available (preferably with pictures) in the sidebar in viewing range. If someone lands on a page, you want them to see there's more related stuff to check out. *Bonus: Get OIO Publisher if you have wordpress. Monetizing news type sites can be extremely tricky, and to make real money you have to sell the ad space directly. I haven't found a better way to do this than with OIO. This will pay off in the longrun, as you can let them know about your priced products later. 4. Over-deliver on your products. Until you have a super-popular brand, you need to over-deliver on all of your purchased products to carve out a nice little niche in the community. Intentionally over-deliver, plan to over-deliver. You can do this by either upping the content in your digital product, or lowering the cost of it. This will build loyal, repeat customers and help spread the word about your products quickly. 5. Allow others to sell your product for you. Contact bloggers in your niche, provide them with a couple of free copies (perhaps for a promotion), and allow them to do the dirty work for you while you earn your income more passively.
